Here's a thought....why couldn't it just be a safety squeeze. Then you could do it on the first pitch if need be.

If you're for trying suicide squeezes with two outs, that's all I need to know about your baseball knowledge.

 

I agree that bunting with two outs is going against the grain.BUT...

I took over a 16u team in early July last year that couldn't get a timely hit.

In Columbus in the bottom of the 7th of two games I had a batter bunt with two outs, once with two strikes. Won both games by one run.

One opposing coach called it the gutiest move he had ever seen.

We were not the Bronx bombers, so I had them bunt.

Wouldn't have done with one out and a runner on third though.

Safety squeeze would have been the call. The suicide call was not necessary with 1 out. Cost Cooper the game. BTW: In high school most hitters are not the best bunters because of lack of practice or instruction. If the suicide squeeze was so perfect you would see more major leaguers laying down the suicide bunt. Even millionaires have trouble getting it down. This is HS baseball, take the higher probability of a sac fly or breaking for the plate at contact.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say if the bunt is successfully put down with two outs, heat of the moment, a high school kid will pick it up and try to flip it to the catcher to get the run at the plate.

 

We are talking about high school kids here. Not pros. Either way you spin it, the sacrifice bunt with the winning run at third is stupid in my opinion.

Either way, it was very bad timing and poorly executed, but the entire game was awesome. One of the best HS games I've seen in awhile.

 

Cooper lost but they also had some of the best defensive plays from their outfielders in the game. At least 3 diving catches and my favorite play of the year so far, with a Conner runner on 3rd they hit a deep fly to right, catch is made and throws a bullet to home to nail the runner at the plate.

The suicide squeeze call was probably one of the worst coaching decisions I've seen in a while. With 1 out and the winning run on 3rd base, all the batter would need to do is hit a pop fly to any part of the outfield, and Cooper wins the game. Instead the coach called a suicide squeeze, pitch out, runner was dead meat. Now if there were two outs, I'm all for trying it. But never with one out. That was just bad.

 

Getting a bunt down is a lot easier than hitting a sac fly. On a squeeze usually as long as you get it down, the runner will be safe unless there is a great play made by the defense. So nothing wrong with going for the squeeze play with a guy on third in the last inning with only 1 out. However deciding to do it on the very first pitch should be questioned.

 

Who was the batter for Cooper? Is he someone who usually does hit a lot of fly balls to the outfield? If so maybe he could have gave him at least until one strike to hit a sac fly before calling for the squeeze.

^ Chris Setser was the batter. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with the call but a couple things to consider.

 

According to the paper, Smiley had struck out 14 batters in 7 innings so the "just hit a fly ball or put it in play" theory is not as simple as it seems. Setser has struggled some this year and imo is not one of their better bunters so what do you do? Do you think the batter in question has a better chance at making contact swinging or by squaring to bunt and have him at least tip it foul? In one way if you have him take the first pitch and it's a strike and then if you squeeze on the next pitch and he tips it foul then he has one strike left to put it in play against a good pitcher. If he squeeze's on the first pitch and tips it foul, then he has two swings to try and get it in play.

 

Gutsy call either way you go. If the batter executes and is successful then everyone is talking about a great call by the coach. It was not the esiest pitch to bunt but from my angle it was close enough to the plate to at least tip it foul if nothing else. Good game by both teams.

either way it was a great pitch, 2 feet outside, that was thrown at the perfect time.

 

If it was supposed to be a strike then a bad pitch couldn't have come at a better time.

Heard that EKU coach was at game to have a look at Hunter Dunn, but Dunn was not playing because of grades.

Bad timing for both.

We saw the EKU coach leave about the third inning and he didn't look too happy but we had heard he was sick and then the rumors started that it was grades and then we heard he was sick and it was grades. So, who knows. Hunter was not at the game last night but he could still be sick, or it could be grades, or both. If it is grades I hope the young man gets it together as Cooper has had depth problems in their line-up and they could use him back but more importantly, for the Hunters sake as colleges will not want to deal with you if they can't count on you to be eligible.

 

Now, if it really is he is just sick, then I hope he gets healthy and back soon. The team gets AJ back and now has another starter out. Just one of those seasons but a lot of time to get the ship sailing in the right direction.

That has made three times a EKU coach has been to watch Mr. Brady Smiley pitch. Each time he has pitched excellent. I wish him the best, EKU would be getting a solid left hander with nothing but upside as he matures even more.

 

As far as grades, in high school sports if grades are indeed an issue then the player must set out from practice or games until another grading period is updated. Usually a week by week event. If grades are an issue, no excuse would be acceptable as too much help is available for tutoring or extra credit. No grades = No play.
