If this was blake hart it don't suprise me, the kid is good but has been getting ejected since he was 10yrs old anger issues.

I have seen this same thig out of Hart for years. He is above average player but has the worse attitude of any player around.Due in part to his Dad is the coach of his summer team and lets him get away with this kind of stuff and treats him like he is better than he actually is.Classic example of why a dad should not coach his son at this age,

Wasn't there, not a member or parent of either team...........just have a question for the rule hounds out there.....

Since the ball was "cut off" down the third base line, isn't that an attempt at a play at home? The catcher doesn't know if it is coming through or not, so shouldn't he assume that it is and try to take position? If it gets cut AFTER that, then he doesn't have control.......

If he took position AFTER the ball was cut and redirected away from home, then it would seem like the ump made the correct call.

For those that were there.....and are objective (you self assess)........which was it?

UNLESS the player has the ball in hand it is Obstruction! There is no grey area in High School its just not called correctly very often. Was not there or have a dog in the fight, but I guess with the "earlier incident" the ump had already made it clear, what the outcome was going to be if anything happened again......

Defining Obstruction

In high school (National Federation of High School or NFHS) rules, obstruction is defined as any act, physical or verbal (8-3-2) that hinders a runner (2-22-1; 2.22.1c).

In college (NCAA) rules, obstruction is defined as the act of any fielder who, clearly without possession of the ball, blocks the base (plate) or baseline and impedes the progress of any runner (2 - Obstruction AR; 8-7b).

In professional baseball (Official Baseball Rules or OBR), obstruction is the act of any fielder who, not in possession of the ball nor in the act of fielding the ball, impedes the progress of any runner.

Let's look at the following play to determine how to rule on obstruction in all three of the above definitions and rule codes.

With a runner on second base and a single to right field, the runner tries to score. The catcher sets up in the base path a full step toward third from home, readying himself for the throw. The runner (not maliciously) slides into the catcher and is tagged out. At the time of the contact, the throw from the outfield has reached the cutout in front of the plate.

Ruling: In high school and college play, since the catcher was not in possession of the ball, the ruling is obstruction. In professional baseball, there is no obstruction and the runner is out because the catcher was in the process of fielding the ball.

You don't get ejected for obstruction.

Agree with this 100%. Something else went on. Wasn't there, don't know, but blue just isn't gonna toss somebody for the heck of it.

Thanks for clearing that up Unbiased. I thought that was the rule.

You don't get ejected for obstruction.

Clyde, my guess would be this is what the ump used for justification in that scenario since someone stated above both teams had been warned....

Rule 3-3-1n addresses revised penalties for initiating malicious contact on offense or defense. Transgressions will now result in the ball being immediately dead, and if on offense, the player is ejected and declared out, unless he has already scored. If the defense commits the malicious contact, the player is ejected; the umpire shall rule either safe or out on the play and award the runner(s) the appropriate base(s) he felt they would have obtained if the malicious contact had not occurred.

Glad somebody else on here is not afraid to speak the truth, DADS you can't coach your own kids these days.

Since Hart was ejected, does that mean he is suspended for the next 3 games?

There was no malicious contact. Very little contact at all.

Since Hart was ejected, does that mean he is suspended for the next 3 games?

Good question. It's at least 2. Could be 3.

Very good game yesterday. Both Maines and See pitched well. Both got hit hard on a couple occasions, but were able to get out of trouble all afternoon for the most part. Timely 2-out hitting by Ryle was the difference. Two evenly matched teams. If it was a 7 game series I think it would go 7.

As for the incident, I was there and this is what I observed. The Conner catcher was ejected for allegedely attempting to trip the Ryle runner at a play at the plate. The Ryle runner slid into the plate thinking there was going to be a play, however the ball was cut-off near third base. I'm not sure how you can trip someone who is sliding, but in the umpire's judgement he felt it warranted a tripping attempt and a subsequent ejection. The Conner catcher was extremely upset and expressed himself verbally with a series of "bombs" while walking to the dugout and taking off his gear. Meantime, while we were waiting for the replacement catcher to get ready a (presumably) Ryle fan walked over to where alot of the Conner parents were sitting in their chairs behind the backstop and along the third base line. He appeared to be intoxicated and as words flew he did in fact thrust his elbow into one of the Conner parent's face. This triggered several Conner players in the field (including the son of the player) to rush towards home plate. The umpires then diffused that situation and instructed both teams to return to their dugout until order could be restored. During this time, the PA announcer for Conner also made some comments from the scoring tower, and he was also subsequently ejected. It was my impression the police were called to report the man who again, appeared to be intoxicated, and was heading to his car to leave the park. I do know the Conner AD was called and the game was delayed a good 20 minutes until he arrived and was present for the remainder of the game. During this time the players behaved themselves, and there weren't any other incidents. The AD did escort both umpires out after the game, although it was strictly precautionary at that point because no one from either side were misbehaving towards any players, coaches, officials, or umpires.

I have to disagree with Drop the Hammer regarding the Conner catcher returning to the field in his car and blasting music. It was pumping full volume, bass and all. He stopped behind the backstop for only a minute or two, then drove around the school and parked down the 1st base line, music still blasting. After just a minute or two, he left the vehicle and watched the remainder of the game outside the outfield fence.

I will say that there does appear to be some on-the-field issues for Conner, specifically as it relates to a kid or two not being able to control their emotions. There have been several curse words screamed (not whispered), bats thrown, helmets slammed all season long. Arlo has tried to rectify the problem with a series of benchings, but it doesn't seem to be working with a select few. Hopefully, these distractions do not become such an issue as to ruin what could be a very productive and successful season for Conner based on the talent they have.

Glad somebody else on here is not afraid to speak the truth, DADS you can't coach your own kids these days.

Not sure I agree with you. The majority of parents I've seen over the years who have coached their kid(s) are traditionally twice as hard on their own kids as others. They hold them to a higher level of accountability because they are the "coaches' kid" and should know what is expected of them and be setting the example.

Did he get ejected for "attempting" to trip or for faking a tag causing the Ryle player to slide. I think that may sound more reasonable given the Ryle player slid. I am almost positive there is a rule related to this.

I wasn't at the game. Going by what I am reading in the thread, the catcher was ejected because both teams had been warned after a collision/tripping incident earlier in the game.
