Highlands 4 Newport Central Catholic 3

The Birds end a 4 game losing streak and take "round one" against the Breds in front of a packed house tonight at Bartlett Field in Newport. Congrats to Coach Coffey and his team, as well as, to the Breds for not giving up. It's no fun being on the side of defeat in a rivalry game such as this, but it was a very entertaining game for all those in attendence.

Highlands 1st

The game opens with a Whitney Quillen bunt that "dies" millimeters in fair territory, next up Ashley Grosser lies down a bunt and beats the throw to 1st, however Quillen is coming to 3rd and Breds 1st baseman Taylor Burkart fires a seed across to Loren Zimmerman who does a nice job of blocking the bag to record the out. Next up is Shelby Graybill who sends a shot to left and advances Grosser to 3rd. Brennah Dutcher then brings Grosser home on an RBI groundout to 2nd.

NewCath 1st

Michaela Ware singles, Kohls pops out, Zimmerman lines out to 3rd, however Ware was off with the pitch and is doubled up. Highlands 1-0.

Highlands 2nd

KC Broering lifts a fly to right that is misplayed by Alexa Kehoe allowing Broering to advance to second, Haley Coffey draws a walk, Payton Leighty lays down a nice sac-bunt to move the runners up, but then Bailey Spencer pops out to 2nd and Quillen pops out to 1st.

NewCath 2nd

Kristen Schreiber singles and takes second on a PB, Burkart moves her over to 3rd with a sharp groundout to SS, but two infield pop outs later the inning is over. Highlands 1-0

Highlands 3rd

Grosser pops out to the catcher, Graybill triples to rightcenter, Dutcher pops out, then Kendell Turner rips a triple to bring in Graybill.

NewCath 3rd

With two away Ware singles, Kohls reaches on an error at SS. Then with 2nd & 3rd Zimmerman punches one over 2nd, but Quillen makes a nice catch to end the inning. Highlands 2-0

Highlands 4th

Coffey & Leighty both draw walks and a WP later they are at 2nd & 3rd. Spencer lifts one to center and Morgan Martini makes the running catch and delivers a "seed" to Schreiber at the plate to double up Coffey. Quillen walks, but Grosser flys out to center.

Highlands - Graybill 3-4, 2 triples, 1RBI. Turner triple, 1RBI. Leighty triple.

NewCath - Ware 3-4, 1RBI. Kohls triple, 1RBI.

Pitching

Highlands - Spencer 7 innings, 7 hits, 3 runs, 3 K's, 1 BB.

NewCath - Neace 7 innings, 7 hits, 4 runs, 2 K's, 5 BB.

Losing the girl with the 1-2 count with two down in the 6th hurt.

Sounds like a good one though!

Was a good game that could have gone either way. The next match-up should be even better. Glad to see Neace on the field and healthy.

Ashley Grosser is a good one. She battled during this at bat, fouling a couple off if I recall correctly.

Very entertaining game to say the least.

Neace is the NCC pitcher that has been injured recently, I assume?

For not throwing for over a week following her concussion she is doing a fine job, plus she was all we had tonight. Taylor Burkart was not in any shape to come in and pitch, as she had to sit out a few innings because she was battling a stomach bug and was about to :puke: , so it was all up to Sarah.

Congrats to both squads for a competitive early season matchup. Special props to Kendal Turner for the big RBI triple.

Fun game to watch Defense was outstanding for both squads. I think only 1 error between the teams. Spencer was extra efficient. 80 pitches. 57 were strikes...

Sounds like a fun game...congrats to HHS....they seem to be finding ways to win games..... NCC seems to be finding ways to loose them lately. ..lets hope they don't figure it out before Friday!

Nice to see Highlands play a clean game. Their D has not supported their pitcher well the last couple of games. Their lineup can hit. If they play solid D they can be a tough squad.

WOW! Don't get to see many girls hit bombs like that.

Great Game to watch! Both teams hit it pretty good putting pressure on the D, both teams rose to the occassion and played well in game 1 of an exciting District Matchup. Does anyone have the stat on how many baserunners were left on base? It seemed like both teams had mutiple opportunaties to score throughout the game but a nice defensive play would end the rally! I remember a line drive that Whitney Quillen for HHS where she went back having to stretch out to make the play for the third out that I think saved a run or 2. NCC Shortstop made a nice leaping catch on another hard line drive! The throw from the first to third in the first inning to get the first out was a big play after just 2 batters with Graybill coming up to hit. NCC Center Fielder made a great throw to Schrieber who was in perfect position at the plate the runner who tagged up had no chance on what looked like a run for sure. I know there are others! It would of been worth the price of admission! Game 2 is scheduled Thursday April 25 at Highlands.

Agree.....

With Graybill only being a Freshman I would say Sky's the limit. She can smoke the ball. Almost effortless....

Not to be "picky", but there were 4 errors total in this one, by my account. Highlands 1, SS with a throwing error. NewCath 3, The 1st some might give a hit because it was not touched, however WITHOUT A DOUBT this ball was cleary catchable. SS throwing error, RF dropped fly ball. Amazingly though none of these errors resulted in any runs.

When I get home from work I will let you know, but I want to say it was something like 15 or 16 combined.
