Just where us Boyd County fans wanted to be at this point in the year. We have a team that could dominate any Region game on any given night, and we get no respect.

 

I think it is awesome and I think the end result will be awesome

Cubster you keep listing Elliott as the Dow Jones up and down squad!!! Here is a question (third time asked). What is up and down about an 18-4 record along with 16 wins of the last 18???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

If I were ranking the top 10 in the region (with reasoning in parentheses), I would go with:

 

1. Morgan Co. (10-1 vs. the 16th region)

2. Fairview (Won 9 of last 10 with only loss on the road at Boyd)

3. Elliott Co. (Won 14 of last 16; will either prove me right in last 5 games or make me look stupid - last 5 are Fairview, Ashland, Raceland, Morgan and Russell)

4. Russell (Won 6 in a row and 8 of 9; 3 of their losses were to 2 Lexington schools and Bishop Brossart)

5. Boyd (Best player in the region, but not the best team; lost 3 of last 4)

6. Ashland (If based on record they would be lower, but based on coaching and history, I'll put them in the top 6)

7. Raceland (Decent record, but haven't beaten anyone in the top 6)

8. Greenup (Also a decent record; but most of their wins are against subpar teams; lost 4 of 6, including one to Raceland)

9. Rowan (Usually plays everyone tough, but seems to come up short)

10. East Carter or West Carter (Hard to say; East has lost 6 of 8 and West has lost 4 in a row after showing some promise)

 

This, of course, is just my opinion and I can look at everyone else's top 10 and see their reasoning, as well. The bottom line - 1) its hard to predict high school basketball and 2) this region is up for grabs this year.

 

Here's my updated top 10:

2. Elliott Co. (18-4 overall; Won 15 of last 17; last two games were wins over Morgan and Fairview)

3. Fairview (Won 9 of last 11 with road losses at Boyd and Elliott)

4. Russell (Won 6 in a row and 8 of 9; 3 of their losses were to 2 Lexington schools and Bishop Brossart)

5. Boyd (Best player in the region, but not the best team; lost 3 of last 4)

Elliott's win over Fairview will be noted in next Sunday's poll. This region is very closely matched and matchups will play a big role in determining the team going to Rupp.

Redblood Boyd has been 2-3 all season until this past week. A double digit loss to a 6-12 team dropped them last week. They have plenty of games left down the stretch to climb back up the poll.

A loss to Bath County and a pasting at the hands of Rowan County. I will say this sounds and looks like a different Elliott County than those of the past that usually folded after the All A ie an almost 40 point turnaround last year in their district loss to Lewis.

They are clearly establishing themselves as contenders. Kudos to the players and wily veteran coach Rick Mays.

The loss to Bath was very early in the season with a team starting three freshmen. It is obvious those freshmen continue to grow and improve as the season goes along. The Dow Jones comment is pretty stale at this point in the season. They are playing pretty well.

There are some notable games tonight that will continue to shape the 16th region poll heading into tournament time. I noticed:

 

Bath County vs. Russell

 

Rowan County vs. Boyd County

 

Ashland vs. East Carter

 

Also, Menifee, Lewis, Fleming, Rose Hill, and Raceland all play out of region tonight.

Pretty much every team in this region is like that. They might win by 20 or they might lose by 20 - that's what makes high school basketball fun.

Fairview, if you look doesnt have a 14 point loss to a bottom half team. Nor have they lost by 30.

 

Fairview's only down you show with these games is the overtime win over Menifee. Elliott's January is a roller coaster ride. Fairview has 2 single digit losses to top 5 teams on the road.

They have lost to Elliott not once, but twice this season, however. I bet that if Elliott had a choice between 1 win and 2 close losses or 2 wins and one blowout loss that they'd take the 2 wins.

Looks good, but I wouldn't put Russell ahead of Boyd yet. Since they play this week, let the Red Devils prove that they belong ahead of the Lions first.

That is next week that Russell plays Boyd County we have Greenup County friday.
