frankdracman23
Saw this in a record book that Dixie put 100 on Newport in a game in 1969? Anyone remember anything about it? Dixie had some good teams late 60s /early 70s but Newport was good too weren't they? Did Dixie lay it on any other teams that year?
ThrillVille Cardinal51
That was back in the good ole days. When kids would cry about the score being run up on them, their coach gave them a salt tablet and told them to take a lap.

I was a Freshman at Newport the score was 100-20. I caught a TD pass my 1st one of the year. I only played the last 4 games on the varsity. Newport was not that good back then as they only had about 20-25 players and that was after they moved 3 players up from the freshman team. Newport also lost to Highlands that year 80-0 and to Holmes 66-6. Newport did have the best QB in the area Mike Shoemaker who went on to Cincinnati on a scholarship and start QB for them. Well thanks for sharing. Wondered if it was just a bad year for Newport. I'm guessing the next three years were better.

It did get better my senior year we were 4-4-2. Yes way back then you had ties. We even tird for the city championship 14-14. I think that was the first year Newpot didn't have a losing season in about 10 years.

JOHNDUNHOFT
I played against Dixie that year and they had Charlie Fugazzi and Dave Henderson in the backfield also Melvin Horton and Mike Hastings on the line. That was a very good team and they beat us (Lloyd) 32 to 6. And we beat Newport by 2 scores and yes Shoemaker was an Awesome QB. JD
BIGZIG
Mel Horton was my cousin and a very hardnosed football player. Mel grew up in Bromley along with another cousin, Jimmy Parrot who was also a very good football player at Dixie.
