The closer is not expendable but like every other position, particular closers are.

 

Good grief, every team has a guy or guys that only pitch at the end of a game if it's tied or if their team has a small lead. Whether you guys want to admit it or not, someone in the closer role is a necessity.

 

If you have a good one that is unknown in another role, chances are you stay with him.

 

You can ignore the information if you want. Yes every team will settle on a closer, so yes someone will fill that role. The point is that the role is easy to fill.

 

On a side note, of the top save earners of all time, seven of the top twelve were Reds at some point in their career. John Wetland never appeared in a game for the Reds.

I think your research proves that closers can be found even as the season is going on and that a pre determined dominant one isn't necessary.

 

Since I do not have any info on when a player was named a closer, I do not know how my research would lead you to that conclusion.

Name the 10 starters that will finish with the most wins, bet you don't get 4 right. this argument as it pertains to Chapman is silly when he is an unknown commodity as a starter. Solid closers may be easier to find than starters, but sometimes there are guys who are just different. You don't get a nightly spot on sportscenter if you are just another closer.

 

I think Chapman should close. It doesn't take away from the fact that closers are a dime a dozen. I just can't get past 9th inning leads winning at the same clip as they did for 113 years. It's really hard to argue that closers matter with that stat.

Yes every team has a pitcher pitch the 9th inning. It doesn't mean they think it's vitally important to have a big time closer. The Rays are probably the smartest team in baseball as far as where they spend cash. They're on their 6th closer in 7 or 8 years.

Most stats say that a) closers are INSANELY overrated and b) most MLB teams are not managing their bullpen's correctly due to the almighty "save statistic".
