They needed better starters for the series. Maybe we did watch a different series. The one that I saw the Reds lost.

 

The Reds didn't have a starting pitcher start two games of the series yet you said the 2nd time through the rotation is why they lost. So you watched something different.

Didn't help. Neither did the defense of the 45 years old third baseman that some on here wanted out there b/c he was so much better on D than the guy that was clearly a better hitter last year.

Actually, that is exactly my point. Appreciate your help in making it. Reds pitching failed them in the series, therefore, they have to try Chapman to find that dominant #1 who would hopefully win game one and come back and win again in four or five as Rio did in 90.

Chapman would be the number 3 guy at best in the rotation. Cueto and Latos are as good as they get. I'm sure the Reds predicted Cueto getting hurt after one batter in game one...

It really was an easy decision. Your ace goes down in the first inning, your best hitter never returned to full strength, there were base running mistakes that didn't happen often. Sometimes that's how it goes.

Throwing the chance of injury out of the equation the difference in this team will be how Bailey does if you ask me. He has a 17win season, they are the top dog.

And to bring this argument full circle, if closers were overrated, there wouldn't be any. Baseball is sound enough fundamentally to have eliminated them. Similar to starters innings from the 60's. Those days are gone because there was a better way.

Solid closers may be easier to find than starters, but sometimes there are guys who are just different. You don't get a nightly spot on sportscenter if you are just another closer.

Cordero was unwanted when he got here and he was followed by Madsen. we have had guys like Weathers and Stanton have success in that role. the Cowboy was a convert.

The closer is not expendable but like every other position, particular closers are.

 

Good grief, every team has a guy or guys that only pitch at the end of a game if it's tied or if their team has a small lead. Whether you guys want to admit it or not, someone in the closer role is a necessity.

 

If you have a good one that is unknown in another role, chances are you stay with him.
