14th Region 2013-14

Thoughts on the 14th region next season?

Perry County Central: The Commodores were Region Runner-Up. They lose Dalton Cornett, Darryl Beatty and Austin Pray. They do however return Braxton Beverly and Justin Johnson. The Dores will more than likely be a tad bit down next season but I fully believe they'll be in contention for the regional crown.

Knott County Central: This could possibly Knott's best team they've had in recent years with just about everyone returning but theirs a IF along through here, their was an interesting rumor going around before this season got started that Camron Justice and his dad might be moving to Scott County. I don't know how true it is/was just that before the season started Perry County Central tried to get Raymond Justice as their head coach but was declined because they were waiting a year and then moving to Scott County. Not sure how true or accurate that is, just what was going around before the season started and heard it a few more times during the season. So who knows about that.

Hazard: Bulldogs will be fully charged and ready to go. They return a loaded Junior class (that will be seniors next year). Hazard was eliminated from district and regional competition.

Cordia: The Lions should be a very good team next year even tho they lost a lot I still fully believe they will be good, about like this year, maybe a little better.

Letcher County Central The only significant player the Cougars lose is Cody Gregory, they return a solid group of players and are looking to make it back to the regional tournament. Crazy rumor going around is that Coach Fugate (Breathitt County Head Coach) maybe following Coach Holcomb to Letcher County Central to become the Letcher County Central head basketball coach, replacing Coach Hammonds, who has yet to be fired or resign and from what I saw at the regional tournament, that doesn't appear to happen. Have to keep a close eye on this one.

Breathitt County: Bobcats will be down in 2013/14. They lose probably one of the best guards in the 14th region in Alex Hamilton, they also lose Richard Trent, Michael Fugate and Cory Shouse but they return guard Wes Noble. I'll have to keep a close eye on the Coach Fugate/Letcher Central rumor.

Estill County: Engineers lose Brandon Morris, Colby Baber, Josiah Munice (missed entire 2012/13 due to a torn ACL) but the good news for the Engineers is they return Trevor and Trenton Jenkins, Chase Alexander, Michael Bishop and they'll have star PG Trevor Jones back which is a big plus for the Engineers. Everyone seems to think they'll be better next year than this past season.

Owsley County: The Owls will be right their in contention for the district title. Owls lose big man Izaiah Allen but return everyone else, Joey Grove, Noah Shelby plus many others. Should be a very good team next year.

Lee County: Rebuilding year for the Bobcats as they lose Tyler Evans, Brant Cornelius, Clint Cox, TJ Traylor, Chris Stamper, Blake Gabbard, James Gilbert which is their entire starting lineup, plus the Bobcats will have a new head coach as coach Danny Wright has stepped down.

Buckhorn: The Wildcats will be another good team in the 14th next season as they return all but 1 player. I look for them to be in the regional tournament next season.

Powell County: Another rebuilding year for the Pirates. They lose arguably the best shooter in the region in Trey Marcum they also lose Brett Thompson, Aaron Townsend and Clayton Cooksey, even tho Clayton didn't see the court that much. The Pirates might be in worse shape next year as they were this year.

Keep us informed on all things associated with the 14th, coach changes, transfers, rumors, etc. Thanks.

Always look forward to your insight on the 14th region.

I thought Breathitt was open.

Lee County position might be filled by Powell County assistant coach Tim Cornett, still waiting to get a confirmation on that.

Breathitt County as far as I know is still open. Haven't really heard anything about it.

Riverdog44, Which Goodwin are you talking about? The only Goodwin I remember is @ Powell County.

Was told this morning that Lee County HAS NOT been filled and that no contact has been made between Tim Cornett and Lee County. Was told that the ones in the running are: Eric Mullins (Perry Central Asst), Brian Johnson (Old Bath Co. Coach) and a current Rowan County Girls assistant.

14th region runs through KCC

What happened to Lee Co girls coach getting the job?

Have no idea. I'll ask around and see what I can come up with

They lost the point guard that was the star of their team to graduation. But they still have some good players returning. Plus, Rhodes is probably scouring the east coast and Canada as we speak for talent to add to his roster.

They have two big time kids who have moved to the area and enrolled in classes already. One of them is a top 100 big man.
