March 8, 201313 yr Beer, red wine, bourbon for me was love at first taste. The only think I can think of I really can't stand is gin.
March 8, 201313 yr I can say, though, that much like your experience of having folks who do drink alcohol take issue with your choice to not drink alcohol, I have experienced both what you're describing AND have witnessed the exact opposite at times too. I know a small handful of individuals who simply choose not to drink, and of the 7 of them (7 come to mind...there might be another 1 or 2 out there that aren't occurring to me at the moment), 4 of those people regularly make it a habit of saying, "I don't know why you need to drink alcohol to have a good time"...among other things.I work with a woman like that, most annoying creature to endure. Every time we had a company dinner or gathering, she'd start in. I finally asked why the hell she came since she didn't drink and it bothered her so much that we did. She hasn't been to one since, we've all enjoyed ourselves so much more. Win, win.
March 8, 201313 yr I get what you're saying. For the record, I completely respect your choice not to drink alcohol. I can say, though, that much like your experience of having folks who do drink alcohol take issue with your choice to not drink alcohol, I have experienced both what you're describing AND have witnessed the exact opposite at times too. I know a small handful of individuals who simply choose not to drink, and of the 7 of them (7 come to mind...there might be another 1 or 2 out there that aren't occurring to me at the moment), 4 of those people regularly make it a habit of saying, "I don't know why you need to drink alcohol to have a good time"...among other things. For what it's worth, that statement is a bunch of crap. Anyway...2 of those 4 people have effectively worked their way out of my groups of friends because of the way that they always insist on griping about the fact that, when our crowd gets together we usually have beer in the fridge, and there are usually at least a few of us who go ahead and have something to drink. As dis-tasteful as it is to be pressured to "just try it...come on, just try it" when you have made a choice not to drink, it's equally as dis-tasteful to be held in contempt by those who don't drink simply because you're enjoying yourself with a drink. There are fanatics on both sides of any argument. The people who preach against drinking alcohol are usually doing it for moral or religious reasons. I do not like preaching of any kind. I have no religious or moral reasons for not drinking alcohol. I simply do not want to do it. The only reason I posted in this thread was to say I don't know if I like the taste of alcohol because I have never tasted it. I do respect people that do like alcohol as long as it is in moderation. By the way, I think every other adult in my family drinks alcohol. Edited March 8, 201313 yr by Birdflu
March 8, 201313 yr Yes, there's lots of things that EVERYONE does on almost a daily basis that they really have no interest in. Just not sure what the point of knocking something that you've never tried before is.I don't see how his choosing not to engage in an activity could be considered "knocking" that activity. Do you want to become a tightrope walker? No? Should we criticize you for not having tried it first? When you say, "I've never tried it because I don't want to like it", that seems an awful lot like you're afraid you'd like it, like it's some kind of evil or something that you need to stay clear of, which is just utterly ridiculous.Maybe he (or anyone else) knows he has addictive tendancies, or a family history of dependancy. You really can't judge people's reasons for what they do or do not do.

And sure you can. People do it all the time.

You really can't judge people's reasons for what they do or do not do. I am very sure I do not have an addictive personality. I am adopted, so I don't know my family history. I am just not interested in alcohol. I appreciate your understanding of my position. It seems that so many people are getting defensive because I stated that I have never had a drink of alcohol. I never said anyone was bad for drinking alcohol, as long as they did so responsibly. And when I said I didn't want to know if I liked the taste of alcohol, it has nothing to do with fear. The point is moot anyway, because I have no interest.
March 8, 201313 yr For the record, I haven't judged anyone in this thread. If someone doesn't want to drink, that's their right and I respect it. I just found it odd that someone had never tried alcohol and seemed so against something they've never tried.

Just so you know, you don't seem anything like the woman I work with that I spoke about and wasn't lumping you in with people like her. I respect you conviction, hell, I admire it.

I just found it odd that someone had never tried alcohol and seemed so against something they've never tried. I have never tried heroin either. I realize that alcohol is legal and heroin is not, but I don't have to try heroin to know it is not for me. I wouldn't try it if it was legal. And as I have said before, I am not against people drinking alcohol, it is just not for me.

That's the whole thing, every needs to respect each other's positions, even if they don't agree with them. I have been around many people who drink alcohol and it doesn't bother me at all. I just don't partake myself. I make a heck of a designated driver and I get all of the free soft drinks I want.

March 9, 201313 yr And to knock 15 year old thrillville![/quote I know you are joking, but I could not condone that because it was illegal and therefore not drinking responsibly. I admit that was another reason I posted.
