Would have loved to have seen some of those Covington Grant vs Covington Holmes games. Where was Covington Grant at how was Covington split for those two schools?

 

The document that I did some of my research from indicates that the two schools combined after the 1964-65 school year due to integration. I'm just guessing that one was all-white and the other was all-black, but I do not know that for sure. Maybe someone could chime in and give us the scoop. And no, I wasn't even born yet. :lol:

You are correct as usual Statman! Covington Grant was the all-black school and was combined with Holmes in 1966/67 I think. The school still stands today, it is located at 8th or 9th and Greenup I believe.

Covington Grant was started in 1876 by William Grant a congressman wanting to get the black vote for election. He was successful. The elementary was called Lincoln-Grant and the high school William Grant HS. They moved to 844 Greenup in 1932 and is still there but is sitting empty. Prior to that it was located in various churches in the area. It has been pruchased by someone or a corporation waiting to have something done with it. It could be renovated to apartments or offices.

In the Region Finals, yes. Last time CovCath beat Holmes in the Region Tourney was in the 1995 semifinals 64-60 in OT.

No in 1992 the alignments were:

 

33rd: Walton, Simon Kenton, Ryle, Boone County, Heritage, Conner, St. Henry, LLoyd

34th: Beechwood, CovCath, Holy Cross, Dixie, Ludlow, CovLatin (and maybe Villa Madonna)

35th: Holmes, NewCath, Newport, Dayton, Bellevue

36th: Scott, Highlands, Brossart, Silver Grove, Campbell County

 

The 9th had 25 teams in it then wow!

Covington Catholic, Covington Holmes and Covington Holy Cross have a long history of being in the same district; however, they were all in the 34th District from 1955-1987. From 1988-1996, Holmes was in the 35th while CovCath and Cross were still in the 34th. They all came back together in the 35th starting in 1996-97 basketball season.
