St Xavier vs Trinity will it happen again .

Can anybody beat these guys , and get in the 4 A State Championship and win it.

Yes. They typically aren't the most atheletic teams in 4A. The difficulty in defeating them is that they are consistantly deep and well disciplined. If a talented team can meet them in the playoffs while healthy and plays a disciplined game they can beat them and go on to win the championship.

It almost didn't happen this year. John Hardin ring a bell.

LSU, my friend...key word here is Almost. Trinity was on a huge run and John Hardin was wore out and the Rocks would have won going away. And to answer with my $00.02, X & Rocks again. The rest of us will just hold on.

With all due respect Larry, John Hardin almost beat X. 21-20 in the final seconds. Coach elects to go for two and the win...

Really Larry, what has changed in the past year that has such an impact on 4A football? Just a year ago Trinity watched from week two on. For three years prior to 03' the Tigers watched as Male played in the big game. What has happened in the past year that makes all of this impossible in the future?

LSU, good point about the JH game, Male last won the title when? Chris Redmon's senior year. Both Jv & freshmen teams were outstanding for the Rocks & X. (just reading comments from those fans) So it doesn't take much to see the future. JH played well at home...Again the Rocks would have won easily if the two had matched up.

Male last won the title in 2000. Brandon Blackerby was the QB. They also won in 1998 and 1993.

Thanks MM, just too lazy to get my programs out... so 5 years ago was the last one. Who was the last Jefferson Public before Male to win 4A?

4A football began in Kentucky in 1975. Since that time there have been only two Jefferson County public high schools to win a 4A state championship in football. One of those schools was, as you noted, Male. The other won in 1979. That school was Butler. They triumphed over Henry Clay 21-7. Jefferson County schools have been the bridesmaid a number of times in 4A football since 1975. DeSales, a small Catholic school in the south end of Louisville, lost to Henry Clay 20-7 in 1981. The next year, a very good Christian County team beat a talented Southern team 10-3. Ballard was beaten by Christian County 14-10 in 1984. Manual was on the short end of the stick by 28-0 score against Trinity in 1988. Of course, both Trinity and Saint X have lost in the state championship game, most recently Saint X this past season.

Trinity and Saint X have each won the 4A state championship a number of times since its inception. Saint X was the titlist in 1975,1978, 1986, 1992, 1995, 1997, 1999, and 2004. Trinity wore the crown in 1976, 1977, 1980, 1983,1985, 1988, 1989, 1990,1994, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2005. Note with Trinity there were two threepeats!

Boone County has been to the title game four times, but has never won. Saint X has dropped three 4A state championships, and Henry Clay, Trinity, Male and Warren Central were runner-up twice.

Two notable factoids: 1)Since 2000, there have been 12 teams to vie for the 4A state title. It has been an all Jefferson County affair, with the lone exception of Scott County in 2004. 2) Of the 31 4A state championships, 21 belong to St. X. and Trinity.

I would say the odds are in their favor and it is almost 100% garunteed that one of them will make it.

I think both X and T have suggested to re-districting so we will face each other prior to State Finals.

Any thoughts?

It's going to be X and Trinity again, probably for the next 3 years, at least. They had some WICKED good freshmen squads last year.

I simply don't see the KHSAA giving up the pay day. It would be a financial windfall for Trinity and St. X.

Unless another Clark County type team rises up this year with 3 or 4 quality offensive backs and the linemen needed to protect them, then the Rocks should make it. St. Xavier will have a tougher time, especially in their district.

I'd enjoy seeing LexCath and CovCath bumped up to 4A to increase the competition.

As long as the public schools statewide insist on keeping enrollments hovering around a 1000 or less, then they cannot expect to win very many 4A football titles. It is a numbers game at that level. Ryle hurt the other Boone County schools. Lexington adding the new and improved Paul Dunbar years ago depleted the other schools somewhat. Oldham County High was just making some noise when South Oldham opened. Then North Oldham was created. Another new school is slated later this decade in Oldham. Warren County continues to build more schools, thus decreasing enrollments at the other schools in and around Bowling Green.

My understanding is many school districts feel holding their enrollments down to 1000 per school is better for the students and teachers. You can't expect to win the 4A state football title very often as long as this practice takes place.

Just you ever consider they were thinking of the best 'educational' situation when determining the enrollment. Not every school places football wins above all else at their school. That's exactly why they have the class sytem based on size. Contrary to your belief, many of us send our kids to school to learn in the best setting, football is/should be a bonus!
