Or...they played against two teams who were very deliberate on offense at the beginning of games. Not to mention, this was their third game against a decently athletic Newport team. Let's not forget what they did to Conner that final regular season game, looked pretty good offensively before pulling their starters.

On a side note, did anybody notice the backboards shaking after shots?

 

Funny that you should mention this. I was noticing it during warmups and wondered if I was the only one seeing all the shaking going on, and how it might effect shots. Seemed like the backboard near the front doors was worse, but they both indeed were shaking. I was thinking that this could seriously effect whichever team had that hoop near the door in the 2nd half, which turned out to be Newport. They already had an uphill battle against the Breds, this couldn't help. I've been to Highlands about 4 times this season and this was the first time I noticed such a significant wobble. What up with dat? :idunno:

From the early goings of the season I've been intrigued with Newport's potential and how they were better than advertised in pre-season picks. They've played this season with a lot of heart and intensity, however I haven't been so blind that I haven't noticed that they frequently make frustratingly unwise decisions. Snapp works harder than any from the sidelines, and I admire what he gets out of his guys, but I'm constantly questioning his, as well as his players decisions. I'm far from being coach material, and I trust that Snapp knows the game well. It's apparent that his players would rather run free and do their own thing, which is ill-advised of course, but you also can see how it robs them of their rhythm to constantly be looking to him on the bench for him to scream his bloody head off with demeaning instruction. Sometimes they seem to respect him, sometimes it looks like they're on the edge of telling him to go fly a kite.

 

One thing that stuck out with me the whole game was how ill-effective Newport was in getting Pearson involved more in the game. Schulte certainly had him locked in check the whole night, but I kept wondering, "Can't they run something once in awhile that included setting a pick for him?" Sure, playing NewCath is like trying to get around moving trees, but come on... Pearson is dynamite if you can try clearing a lane for him. I didn't see much effort in doing so. He's really their most reliable scoring option and they really need to focus on him. I don't know if that was Snapp's fault or the players for not at least trying.

 

I wish Newport all the best in the Regional tourney but they're far from being the smartest in the field of 8. I expect them to keep things interesting with whoever they play, but they're really going to have to gain some smarts real quick to get very far. I really don't like knocking them this way because I do appreciate their spirit, and I'd hate to say anything to rob them of that, but they've got a lot of fine tuning to accomplish at this very important juncture of the season, and I'm a bit doubtful that they'll be able to sort it all out in time. Perhaps they'll prove me wrong.

I'm not saying the poinsett kid didn't play well(13pts), I thought the coach would maybe give it to a deserving senior on their team. I was at the Newport Bellevue game and when the Hornback kid would leave the game Newport would start to pull away and when he would return, Newport's lead would shrink. Not that any of this matters at this point, was just making an observation.

They probably gave it to Poinsett because he was the straw that stirred the drink for Bellevue all year...
