Conclusion - Without classes, if your girls' enrollment isn't at these levels, you simply aren't going to win a state championship in Kentucky. Hoosiers was just a movie and Cinderella just lost by 50 with a running clock. We need classes.

This is my point in all sports in the KHSAA..........GO to classes like all other 49 states do.

Sure we do, if you want to ruin the Sweet16, and I am a small school guy. Our girls finished in Final Four of All A State, but me and my kids would rather win the 8th Region than win the All A State. With the All A Classic, us "small" schools get to have our cake and eat it too.

I've said this before, but here goes. If the KHSAA was really all about the kids playing the games we'd have classes in KY. The cash cow is the boys state tournament and everyone knows it's about the money and not about that kids playing. I've coached at both ends of the spectrum and I understand both very well. Classes are the only real fair way for competition to be level. You'd think that in high school sports fairness would at least be discussed, but not when your messing with all those dollars.

I say this every year. Go to two classes. Two regional champs one from each class. Then the 16 regions match up every year: 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4, 5 vs 6 and so on with a trip to Rupp and Diddle on the line.

 

 

You have the Regional Champ vs Regional Champ games played back to back, i.e. Class A @ 6, Class AA @ 8. That would be a bigger gate than the 1st round of the Sweet 16 boys or girls. Imagine here in NKY games played at NKU with the Class A team from the 9th playing the team from the 10th @ 6, followed by the Class AA game.

 

Then the winners of the Regional vs Regional winner head to the Sweet 16. So at Rupp/Diddle you would still have 16 teams but 8 in Class A and 8 in Class AA. Tow state final games played back to back. I think that the Sweet 16 would make more money especially in the early rounds because you could have 2 teams from one region and coul;d draw more fans when they can see two teams they are familiar with play.

Zero chance this year because Marion County with 400+ girls enrollment wins hands down.

Or maybe our definition of small schools is also different. Elizabethtown won in 1998, West Carter won in 2000. I don't think of them as big schools.

 

Since you saw fit to break out private from private, is your issue simply with school size, or strictly with girls' enrollment?

 

Currently the ONLY schools that class their state championships are football, track and cross-country. Just those 3. And I'm not sure, but track and cross-country - although they hold the state championships for all 3 classes on the same day - are probably just too unwieldy given the number of participants - to hold as a single state championship meet.

You went and said the magic word. I'll give you a hint - it's one of the three other sports you cited.

I hope it never changes. I love the fact that any team no matter how big or small, can win their region and go to state. And even if they don't win, they get to compete with the best of the best. That's why the sweet 16 is so special. I might be wrong but honestly, when I look at state champs in the other sports, I only pay attention to the top classes.

You are so right and all this talk is wasted time because the KHSAA will never go to classes in basketball...never.
