Nice phrase but your wrong. Newport was missing there second leading scorer. As well as Bracken Co was the 4th game of the week. So I would say those kids were and are tried. Not to take away anything from those kids from Bracken Co apparnetly the won the game, hitting big shot after big shot. So hats off to them. Highlands Basketball program is on the decline compared to what it use to be. If Newport does the rite thing they may be the New number 2 team in the basketball district. As long as GG and DS are not refereeing the game.

They have some nice talent this year with the Short Brothers and Pearson has developed into a nice player but moving forward you might be in for a rude awakening.

 

Highlands Hoops record over the past 4 seasons has 50 wins and 60 losses. This is basically Mike Flynn's record at Highlands. Willie Schlarman was 84-65 during his tenure but he had some very special players in Nic Simpson, Jeff Vories, Greg McGraw, etc.

 

There is a direct correlation in the Bird football teams winning 6 straight State Football Championships and the basketball program performing at around 500 over the past 6 years. Schlarman's final two seasons were 10-19 and 21-9 so couple that with Flynn's record and you have 81-88 over the past 6 years. They have made Regional appearances in all but one of those years and won the District Championship once.

 

Newport has not done anything over the last 20 yrs except win the Region a few years ago with a stacked team that included Demarco Foster and another 6'6 Cincinnati kid. Any state football championships in there? Any District championships in the last 20 yrs? The banners are looking pretty bare down at Newport these days. The Girls Basketball banner has one year on it......1977.

 

In the end, any coach that takes on the Highlands program will have to deal with the football players showing up late and utilizing most of their year to develop their football skills and conditioning, not their hoops skills. It is what it is.

You got the lucky draw this year so enjoy the easy win over Bellevue and the beatdown you will take to the #1 team in the Region (if they get past Highlands). Oh and ever heard the term One and Done.....this year's Regional will likely see the Wildcats getting that quick cup of coffee and bowing out to either Cooper/Dixie or Holmes.

Secondly not a fan just speaking the truth. I was speaking on This season alone. Don't give a dang what John Messer or Willie Schlarman did. Thirdly with what the HHS football program has done :clap: second to only Trinty in my opinon who all kids live in Louisville. Now Derek Smith Silver Grove. Mike Mitchell has a brother who is and Alumni of Boone Co. so not to mention any other kids who may move in to play football. Jarred Lorenzen not a Ft Thomas kids as well as many other on the roster including now or n the past. So are you not the pot calling the kettle black, when the shoe is on the other foot.

 

Please don't praise your school for doing something and being sucessful at it. But get mad, frown and turn the other cheek when another school does it in another sport and works in it favor.

 

No way on earth will Highlands beats NCC and as proven Newport can play with anyone. I bet if you survey the Coaches of NKY no body want to play them first in the region.

Its all Love, I am from Park Hills. I just have friend that goes to the games and he keeps me updated. I see quite a few bball games and I agree I don't think Newport last long in the region. Best of luck to you and your team.
