I've seen Holmes several times. Who played slow down ball? Score was much to low to say a team had an off night. I get that Walter's hero was on foul trouble, so did they slow it down or did GRC? Or we're both teams just waiting for next week?

I caught most of the second half on the Cards radio station. It sounded like both teams played very good defense, and were equally bad on offense. In his post-game comments, Coach Humphrey stated he was proud of the fact that his team held Holmes offense to the low point total without taking the air out of the ball.

 

Knowing GRC's team this season, they give great effort on the defensive end, but don't have anyone who can consistently put the ball in the basket.

You are right, on both accounts, GRC did not stall the ball, but relied on their defense. We really have a hard time scoring at times. Hence our very low scoring in a quarter.

This was the case last night by both teams.

George Rogers Clark boys basketball coach Scott Humphrey was pleased with his team's defensive performance following a 43-26 loss to Covington Holmes in the Cardinals' regular-season finale Thursday night at Norton Gymnasium.

Although Clark struggled to score, the defensive outing against the Bulldogs gave Humphrey optimism going into the postseason.

 

“I give a ton of credit to our kids,” Humphrey said. “To sit there and guard for 32 minutes and hold Holmes to 43 (points) and you can't score on the other end, it would be so easy to hang your head, and Holmes is so talented they could run out of the gym. We didn't give up a cheap basket all night long. You hold a 43 (points) and you feel like you should have a great chance of winning, but like tonight, it's been a struggle offensively got us all year long. I think tonight was probably our toughest night (offensively).”

Both teams had their lowest scoring output of the season, but the Bulldogs outscored the Cards 28-16 in the second to pull away down the stretch.

The Cardinals honored seniors Blake Roberts and Dariel King prior to the contest. King started and Roberts sat out because of a shoulder injury that has sidelined him since the beginning of the season. Roberts is scheduled to have surgery on both injured shoulders in the near future.

The Bulldogs, one of the surprising teams in the state, won their first 25 games of the season before dropping an 88-85 loss to Newport Central Catholic in double overtime last week.

I would not consider Holmes a top 20 squad if they are scoring 2points in any Qtr. I have seen GRC play a few times this year and its not pretty. This game had to be hard to watch!

You failed to mention how many kids Holmes played due to foul trouble in the first half and left out the fact that the JV played the final 3 minutes of the second quarter. James Bolden on the floor makes a huge difference for them offensively.

I know I can't believe it either. You can argue all day long. It's just hard to believe that a team that is 27-1 scored just 2 points in a qtr. Go figure?

It really is hard to believe that Cov Holmes was held to only 2 points in a qtr. No matter who played, who didn't, how good the defense was, or for any reason really. That must have been a total breakdown? My goodness, is all I can say!
