Spring Football question

Featured Replies

Does each school have to submit a request/notification to the KHSAA for approval for their spring football practice dates?

I don't think so but not completely sure. There is a form they turn in afterwards stating dates that they practiced.

The way I understand it, each school has to submit a form stating the dates that the school will be participating in spring football.

Correct. You can designate a window or you can choose immediately following basketball season.

Each schools spring practice dates are available on the khsaa website.

And I have a second question, what if a team has an unexpected change and therefore wants to change their spring practice date request? Is that allowed?

The dates that I found on the KHSAA website were for 2012, so I am not sure where Stinky found the dates.

It's my understanding that you can submit any dates for that window this spring. I like this.. Don't have to worry about how early our boys/girls basketball teams get put out, should be able to have spring practice in decent weather. I think we are going to try to have spring practice as close as we can to the end of the school year.

My understanding is that the KHSAA would consider a request for a change and would grant it under the appropriate circumstances, but there has to be a pretty compelling reason for the requested change.

The KHSAA appreciated the argument by coaches, particularly those without artificial turf, that trying to have football practice right after basketball season ended was not a very efficient time to be practicing football. There were two concerns that the KHSAA had with changing the rule as to when Spring football would be held: one was the impact on Spring sports; the other was monitoring compliance with the days and time limitations of Spring football. To address the latter, the requirement was added that the coaches had to notify the KHSAA in advance as to when Spring ball would be held. Seemed like a very fair compromise on that point. As to the adverse impact on Spring sports, the KHSAA believed that this issue was best dealt with within the school building and to be worked out by the principal, AD, football coach and the coaches of the Spring sports; a position that I fully supported.

Lack of attention to detail. I saw the list when looking for specifics about when spring practice can begin - failed to notice the list was 2012.

I was looking for the ruling on what does "after the basketball season is over" means. I had heard conflicting thoughts. The by-law is specific, it is after BOTH the boys and girls programs have been eliminated from competition. I know Highlands has chosen this option again - boys will most probably be eliminated next Tuesday, so the girls team will set the timetable for spring practice.

Would a coaching change after the request was made be a compelling reason in your opinion?
