Just heard they are going to be installing a new light system at W.C. Hambley. Anyone know much about this? WIll it interfere with the season at all? What about practice?

Anytime they wait till the last minute to put up lights they take a chance of interfering with the teams practice and games. I think Knott Co. had someone get on their field a few years ago fixing lights and caused a bunch of damage to the outfield.

Well, the way things have worked in the past with the city here in Pikeville, i wouldn't be suprised if it interfered with the season some how.

The lights going in will take about six weeks...and they haven't started yet!

i'm afraid you are right, BaseballFan. I've seen things like this happen before. Remember, in 03 the turf was supposed installed and ready to play on by about mid season........what a joke that was.

Looks like another season messed up by the powers that be. These Seniors will probably lose 2 years playing on their home field. Not to mention the loss of revenue by the boosters for loss of concessions and possibly signage.

One of Pikeville Baseball's biggest fans is on the city commission.

I am sure that 95% of the schools in the state would love to have a playing surface and overall facilities of those at Pikeville. So don't get so upset if it takes a little longer than expected to get the lights, you guys have always had top notch facilites. Be thankful, not upset.

It is my understanding that the field did not meet minimal lighting standards and the city would not allow night activities on the field until those standards were met. If you ever saw a night game there, left field especially was a hazardous place to be because you were playing in the dark. Have patience. Hopefully everything will be ready to go by opening day.

Hey RNC.....if you were from here and were a baseball fan, you would understand. We had to miss and entire season in 03 waiting on the turf. Now, looks like we may miss possibley the first month of the season.

Lighting standards are measured in foot candles and on the baseball diamond, the infield requires higher rating, than the outfield does.

 

Both have to meet or exceed the minimum standards. If this field is both a football and baseball facility, it could have been installed and met the football requirements but not the baseball requirement.

 

It usually can be corrected with more lights being installed on the armatures, brighter bulbs being used, repositioning the existing lights or the installation of new poles with lights.

 

Which are they doing, sounds like installing new poles with lights.

I heard they are going to replace 2 old poles with higher ones. THen use the rest of the old poles and install new lights on them.
