When the TEA Party first came about I had hopes that it would turn into a movement bringing the Republicans more into the Libertarian camp. It gave me hopes that one day I might actually want to associate my beliefs with those of the Republicans again. The religious right and the xenophobes however took it over in full force and drove out any possibility of that happening.

Yep. I gave up on them a long time ago. Too bad because at first I thought they had something.

As I have stated in a previous post, they have been far from right wing candidates. Moderatism has not served the GOP very well in national elections in my opinion. You would have us believe that Reagan was a moderate?

The biggest problem with the last two Presidential candidates is they had to sell out to the far right to win the nomination and it comes back to bite them in the general election.

Not an attack, just an observation. You seem to be suggesting that the GOP needs to "out-democrat the Democrats".

I will ask again:

 

Who is worse for the party? The Bush/Rove/McCain/Romney/Limbaugh/Santorum/McConnell wing or the Paul/DeMint/Lee/Amash/Massie types?

Romney won the primary because Conservatives were told he was "electable." I'm still trying to figure out why McCain won. For God's sake, Romney publicly stated he wouldn't repeal "pre-existing coverage" in Obamacare, that's the worst part of the entire bill. Enough with the Moderates, let's elect a true Conservative.

Compared to some, yes. Not all of his Supreme Court appointees were conservative. He also funded social programs extensively in order to get the military raises he craved for Defense. Reagan also passed an Illegal Alien Amnesty in '86. He wasn't a moderate, but he did know how to compromise and get things done.

Seems like we can't separate economic policy from social policy and that is causing a lot of issues. Reagan was fiscally conservative...a monetarist with Milton Freidman his chief financial advisor, but socially he was more moderate, or as mentioned willing to compromise. We seem to only have choices now between socially and economically conservative Republicans or Liberal - Keynesian to economically socialist leaning Democrats.

I'd be curious to hear thoughts on it. Even better, I'm curious to hear how other BGPers would define their own ideology to guide the Republican party. Whatever you might think about the author's effort, I think he is correct in noting that there's been a lot more "yelping, whining, and fingering" than a consistent ideology guiding policy recommendations and solutions. So, what should conservatism mean today?
