Iceland - Girl sues to use her birth name, not the name "Girl"

DEBATE: ‘Girl With No Name’ Sues Iceland’s Government for Right to Be Called by Her Birth Name | Fox News Insider

The following is from the Associated Press:

Like a handful of other countries, including Germany and Denmark, Iceland has official rules about what a baby can be named. In a country comfortable with a firm state role, most people don’t question the Personal Names Register, a list of 1,712 male names and 1,853 female names that fit Icelandic grammar and pronunciation rules and that officials maintain will protect children from embarrassment. Parents can take from the list or apply to a special committee that has the power to say yea or nay.

Imagine how many kids in this country with goofy names that would be spared the embarrassment...maybe we should get Washington to look at this idea

I hear you, I know a person who named their baby girl "Baby". That is her first name, "Baby".

I bet she will change that when she hits 18

Don't be too sure. Here in Bardstown, there is a lady who frequently shows up in the police reports named Baby Baby.

I wonder if the baby names books that I've seen in the possession of expecting couples have addendums covering things such as "Don't give your daughter a stripper/porno name unless that's what you want them to do with their life."

Or Desiree, or Destiny, or Houston, or Peaches, or … well, you get the point.

Well... I made the mistake of reading a few entries in the comments section. I highly recommend it is you were looking for that last bit of motivation to walk off the Second Street Bridge tomorrow.

At any rate, I have a lot of names like this in my family. The traditional Norwegian system of your surname being your father's name with either "son" or "dotter" attached to it makes for a lot of people with the same last name. Personally, I'd think they'd be clamoring for more names.

My great-great-grandfather was named Eric Erickson. I'd change my name to "Light Breeze" too.

I know a woman named Silver Sky. Her brother's name is Indigo Onyx. Gotta love the drug culture the 70's. It takes all kinds.

I went to HS with a girl named Summer Dawn. Her mom -- possessor of some very, very, very long hippie hair, and more than a few hippyish tendencies -- allegedly wanted to name her younger brother Winter Dew, but daddy drew the line there and the boy's named Shannon instead.

It's not isolated to children of the '70s, though. A recent name I ran across for a pre-teen girl whose mom is at least 10 years younger than me: Wynter Stormm.

Definitely not limited to the 70s. I know someone whose parents gave her the middle name of "Joy." So, naturally, her first name is "Tirzah." Say it out loud once or twice...

You have to linger on the T for a smidge.

My friend used to work in the NICU. My absolute favorite I heard from them was a set of twins named:

DaShawn and DaOthaShawn

Another set of twins from a friend who worked at another hospital:

Limejello and Orangejello
