I actually forgot about this. My reaction was, eh, no big deal. While Vatican II was a very good council, I think may Catholics misinterpreted it. It was supposed to be the church adapting to the modern world, many assumed the church was "lightening up" so to speak. No longer was the "hard" stuff required, you can believe and do whatever you wanted. My assumption about the abstinence on Friday was that it was just to reinforce the notion that be our making small sacrifices on our part, we can reflect on the ultimate sacrifice Jesus made for us.

The changes make sense, but a lot of them didn't really mean a lot to many people, especially in the Nicene Creed. The argument of "one in being with the Father" versus "consubstantial with the Father" probably doesn't mean much to many people. I was, however, happy to see "seen and unseen" changed to "visible and invisible." The latter are the words in Latin and something that is unseen can nevertheless be perfectly visible.

Yes, I knew it was a more accurate translation, but all of these things, taken together, seem to go along with a turn toward more traditional thinking.

I think the movement towards traditional thinking in reality has been going on since early in John Paul II's papacy. After Vatican II many seminaries started to really take liberty with Catholic Dogma and Doctrine and JPII straightened up several and closed down the ones that wouldn't straighten up stressing, how we do things may have changed but what we ultimately believe, the deposit of faith, has not.

 

So speaking more in the present day, I see "fixing" the missal and allowing mass in the Latin Form being more shuffling things up but not so much going back to the past.

 

I think one thing that makes me believe that is how Pope Benedict is not looking at going to the past is how he has very slowly and carefully been changing how he wants the papacy viewed. Keep in mind back in the Middle Ages, the pope was seen in many ways similar to a monarch or an emperor and bishops/cardinal were viewed like princes. Many orthodox Catholics want to keep this view of the Pope and bishops/cardinals as it has been for over a thousand years. Benedict has been looking the other direction. He is trying to stress more and more that while having authority, ultimately the pope's calling is to be a servant and I think he is trying to move from being viewed as a monarch as popes have been for centuries and trying to be viewed more as the servant of servants to God knowing full well he will not live long enough to change a centuries old impression of the papacy but he just wants to get the ball rolling. Many orthodox Catholics still have not gotten over the dropping of the practice of having a coronation for a new pope (I believe Paul IV was the first not to have a coronation??? This would have been in the middle of Vatican II I believe). This has to be driving them crazy.

Very probable. The Archdiocese of Louisville did a decent job of educating parishoners of the changes but more may be needed to truly teach why the changes are important.

That one definitely make sense to me. Just because your are unseen by me at the moment doesn't mean you are invisible. The visible and invisible make the statement more encompassing.

 

Also, switching from "We believe" to "I believe". I think I believe makes it much more personal, that and I have no idea what the guy next to me believes so I really can't speak for him. Also Credo means I believe so saying "We believe" is starting off wrong in the first place, lol.

I don't know how much of a turning back of the clock is coming, but the consolidation of authority seems spot on. I think the recent breakdown in the negotiations between the Holy See and the Society of St. Pius X are almost directly attributable to that movement.

I had no problem with lifting the excommunications of the founders and making Latin Mass available but agreeing to a few things the guys of SSPX wanted would almost make Vatican Council II as if it never happened.
