Atherton football

Satori was there for 5 seasons, started off with a good group of seniors with alot of promise. Season did not go as well as expected, probably should have won 5-6 games that year against a schedule with Iroquois, Waggener, Bullitt East, North Bullitt, Breckenridge County, Central, Henry County to name a few. Numbers were decent to start but dwindled after the first loss and grades affected others later in the season, a few injuries and so on. Regardless, when the kids do come out, they very seldom are the experienced variety. The mentality of that area where the kids are exposed to some very liberal aspects of competitive (?) athletics is differnet to say the least. There is HYR (Highland Youth Recreation) that runs a non- competitive youth organization. A whole lot of kids involved, they do not keep score and focus a lot of attention to not dwell on "beating" another team but focus on being involved in a "nobody loses" concept. Good idea for 4-5 year olds, maybe the older kids should start thinking about winning a little more. There are actual clubs in the school focused on alternative lifestyles and other questionable clubs that probably should be left outside the confines of a public learning facility. IMHO. Again, I have seen the attitude first hand, it is not an environment that is conducive to winning. Satori spent a lot of time and energy in his first year creating a weight room in the basement of the school, a pretty nice weight room, and improving the locker room. Had a lot of nice things going on but again, until the kids start believing they have a chance to succeed, they have a "we can't win" attitude. A lot of things that are not working in favor of the program over there. Could be a good start for a coach or carreer suicide, I honestly think Satori left at the right time and will be coaching somewhere this year as an assistant or even possibly HC.

If that is the case, then those kids will NEVER know how to win. Kids need to learn how to win and lose. It helps you deal with lifes' ups and downs. Sheltering kids like that only hurts them in the long run. If that is the mentality around that school, no one in their right mind would take that job.

Coach Satori did a great job at Atherton, he will land some place and he will do a fine job. He worked as hard as any coach in town, but if you are not in louisville you just cant understand what you are up against. For someone to win at Atherton it will take a big name coach, His name and rep would bring in the kids, but who would take the chance only some young coach looking for a job would.

Nice post BigBull. My son went to Atherton and just got out of Southern Illinois with 2 degress. (his Mom is real Smart) He played soccer since he was 5 and being a football guy it killed me that he didn't at least try football. He said "Dad, its Atherton...I'll get really hurt & besides I want to play goalie". His senior year he was 6'2" 200 lbs and runs like a deer (his Dad was real fast) And now there are times he will say he wished he gave football a look. I just look at him and turn on the TV.

Any word on this job yet, heard they are down to three people. Anyone know who they are?

I told my son he could play soccer if he wanted to but he'd just have to live with someone else. He decided to play football and got a full scholarship his senior year at a D-1 school.

Russ Gibson lives in the Highlands and could win there after he gets his kids. Give him a shot.

I didnt think Gibson was allowed back in Jeff. Co. is he? After that whole mess that occured at Fern Creek I thought he wasnt allowed to return to Head Coaching or teaching. I could be wrong, but that's what i thought.

He taught and coached at PRP when they were really good 4-5 years ago. He retired form Jeff Co. 2 years ago he is not banned.

Gibson doesn't live in the Highlands, and is a mentor of Satori's (Satori was on Gibson's staff at Fern Creek).

Gibson was later cleared and I think he may have received a settlement for defamation of character.

I doubt he would even consider the Atherton job, with his credentials and his reputation cleansed he could get any high school coaching job he wanted.

I don't know who the 3 finalists are, a friend got a thanks for applying letter.

I know at least one job that he couldn't get. What exactly are his "credentials"? Has he ever actually won anything? Needless to say, I'm not a fan of Gibson. I witnessed him showing his "character" in a post-game tirade at Trinity.

The last time I talked to his son(in the fall) he said Mom and Dad are fine living in the Highlands near Cherokee Triangle area. He has been cleared but trust me he can not get any job he wants. He applied for the Iroq. job when Thompson got it and was not a finalist. He has a name that all principals and AD's know and it will effect his hiring for some time.

I didn't know Coach Gibson when the Fern Creek thing happpened, but have since met him when I helped Satori for a couple of years. And on the Bulls we have several Fern Creek guys that played for him and they all will tell anyone that Gibson did nothing wrong.

I think he is a good coach, he had Fern Creek playing at a high level. If that incident is still affecting his reputation that is sad.

Even the Jeff Co Board of Ed. knows the real deal, why else would he have been the PRP off coordinator for a couple of years after leaving Fern Creek.

I agree and have talked to him several times, I am not saying he is or isn't, I just know the view that people who run the HS's have of him. The players will never admit what a coach did, they loved the man and he had their backs many of times.

That would ALWAYS be the defining judgement of one's character. :madman:

I doubt that the mailbox at Atherton was full of applications waiting to be read. What exactly would a coaches' credentials have to be to get hired at Atherton? We have other coaches in the county AND state that have not always done things by the book and they are head coaches. My point is that if a coach of Russ Gibson's qualifications were to apply for the Atherton job, they would be really missing the boat if they did not entertain the opportunity. By the way, his record at Southern High School as well as Fern Creek High School was impressive enough to qualify him for most any job. That is if your question was truly about credentials as a coach.
