Holmes' Englemon had 15 pts 19 boards and took 4 charges.

Sure didn't think this game would be this close.

Newport is much better than advertised. They played pretty inspired and if they keep up that intensity they're not going to be an easy out for any team in the 9th Region. No. 2 Short is a serious player that can create his own shot inside and out. If not for him having to sit too long in foul trouble, the outcome of this came could easily have resulted in a 'W' for the Wildcats. The kid really is that good... No. 40 Peirson (I believe that's his name) is also another strong go-to guy for the Cats. We rarely got the chance to see Short and Pierson in the game at the same time because of the above mentioned foul trouble, but it could be interesting in the future to see what they might do as a dynamic duo. Guard play was pretty decent. No. 14 Turner is a little spunky smart impact ball handler with good instincts that can dish pretty handily and can score the ball too if he's not racking up assists. No. 3 (didn't catch his name) is another little quick guard with decent ball handling skills. Added to the mix they also have a few good sized players (don't know their names yet) that add a lot of rebounding for the Cats. If these bigger guys can develop their close to the basket shooting skills, then watch out... Newport's ratings could go up by leaps and bounds real quick. I already believe that they're ranked far too low in the early goings. Taking nothing away from the Wildcats, I don't think that Holmes exactly played their best game which also affected the close outcome, and I'm expecting them to step it up and connect better with their shots in the future. All in all though, Newport is no walkover. They're a serious team that plans to make an already competitive 9th Region that much more so. This is a true warning that all teams that face them better bring their 'A' game.

Did the young Snapp kid play any varsity?

I saw video of a move Bolden made last night.

Crazy potential for this kid.

Concerning the Snapp boy, I got there at the start of the 2nd qtr and he did not play during that time.

I totally agree with B-Ball-fan that Newport is way better than folks were expecting. Their two bigs were easily 6'5 to 6'6 and played above the rim. I've seen Walton, Conner and Dixie play preseason games and feel that Newport beating any of them would not be a surprise.

Box Score:

Holmes (1-0) - Palmer 2 11 15, Englemon 4 7 15, Bolden 4 3 11, Chames 2 2 6, Pouncy 2 0 5, Coston 0 3 3, Glover 1 0 3. Totals: 15 26 58.

Newport (0-1) - Js Short 9 0 19, Jq Short 0 1 1, Parker 0 4 4, Wright 1 0 2, Turner 2 2 6, Witherspoon 1 0 3, Pearson 3 4 10, Covington 3 0 6. Totals: 19 11 51.

Halftime: 27-27. 3-pointers: H 2 (Pouncy, Glover), N 2 (Js Short, Witherspoon).

Englemon with 15 and 19 doesn't surprise me. He has always had the talent. With the new attitude he has and work he put in over the summer, he is going to be a problem for opposing teams.

So when you look at this Newport squad, who are the boys that have been in the program starting their Frosh year?

Pearson and Turner ?, ?, ? Is Garland playing?

Transfers- Short Brothers, two bigs, Snapp.

Sounds like it is working out.

Yes. His version of one and done is working. There were people in the crowd on the Newport side asking which ones were "Newport" kids.

Garland and Guilkey are not playing. TJ quit prior to the first game.

The other two transfers this year are from Cincinnati. Bringing the total Cincinnati transfers to four.

When did Newport get a bus?

Yea I read earlier where Guilkey is working and opted to not play and Garland, not sure what his deal was. He has great quickness and could have helped them at the guard position.

Guilkey was going to play, he was working out with the team. Once the football players came in, he realized he was not going to be a part of the picture. He a great kid. Another Newport kid pushed to the side.
