Sean Woods Rips Current Kentucky Players

Featured Replies

I disagree, for once with you, well this and anything about Duke. lol.

Woods talks about entitlements, I guess he thinks he is entitled to rip the UK players and not feel the effects? He is a big boy now, a man, you live with your comments and live with the reactions to them. Cal protects his players, the fans protect them as well, just as you will protect Duke players, wrongfully I may add.

Wrong. If Lance Thomas is found to have done wrong then I hope the NCAA acts accordingly.

Did Woods rip them? Yes. Was he wrong? No. It used to mean a lot to people to suit up for KENTUCKY. Now they suit up for the NBA and Calipari. These kids could not care less about Kentucky, UK, Rupp, The Unforgettables, Jack Givens, Sam Bowie....these kids don't care about any of that and playing for KENTUCKY isn't what it used to be. Woods is correct. He just should have kept it to himself.

Guys like Polson, Hood and Miller are the ones I root for. They know what it means to put on that jersey that says KENTUCKY on the front.

He knows he stepped in it....He's already taken to Twitter to deflect.

@SeanWoodsMSU: "In no way were my comments meant to offend or insult the current players at UK. Simply an observation of today's youth everywhere."

@SeanWoodsMSU: "I greatly admire Coach Cal and what he has done for the University of Kentucky and college basketball."

@SeanWoodsMSU: "I will always be proud to have worn a Kentucky Wildcat uniform and to be the head coach at Morehead State Univeristy."

And that is the right thing to do in his case.

I would say as an "entitled" player at UK now, it is more than just the weight of the Bluegrass upon you, it is the entire country. It is laid out from the onset that you will be under the microscope more than at any other program and are "entitled" to absolutely. If anything the bar has been raised for recruits across the country in that they must compete at the highest level in order to play... especially at UK. So while putting on the jersey may be different than it was when he put on the UK jersey, the shoes you have to fill are 10 x larger, and kids know that.

I get tired of the "we would not take a handful of one-and-done players on our team" bull crap. No, your team just can't or didn't land these guys. Sure, who would want MKG, Teague, or Anthony Davis for just one season.

He's definitely lying if he did.

Which he is certainly right about. However, you shouldn't use the current UK players as an example. Just dumb on his part.

For all the guys going to the league the name on the front of anyone's jersey means nothing. And that is fine by me. However, I think now, with the culture created it absolutely means something to wear a UK jersey. Not the same kind of nostalgic pride Woods is talking about, but I assure you it is there and the pressure to live-up to the KENTUCKY name on the front of the jersey and prestige of it is as high as ever.

I don't think it means as much to the kids who come to UK for a year, but I think it does to the majority of the young men when they leave.

I disagree. I think at the end of the day these dudes want to go to the NBA first and foremost. I don't think they know what it truly means to wear a KENTUCKY jersey until they are halfway done with their only season. And some still don't have a clue.

Not in those words, but that is the insinuation and underlying theme. You heard a lot of coaches over the past few years talk about how they want a "more experienced roster" as opposed to what Kentucky has. To a traditional college guy the system in place is a joke. We all know that. But it is the system and not the kids or coaches faults.
I'm sure he'll be booed out of the gym, and rightfully so.

100% disagree on both the will and the should.

I was talking to another person about this who read the quotes and he felt something happened at the telethon that put Sean off a bit. Not sure what that might be. Regardless, the feeling was whatever THAT was is what caused Sean to say it. Sean may be 100% right. However, he probably didn't present it in the best manner.

Sean's part of the UK family and he may be right that some kids feel entitled. However, again, he is part of the family. I would expect him to get a warm reception as both a tribute to his contributions as well as a congratulations for moving up in the coaching ranks. To do otherwise would be to show (again) how thin-skinned we are as a group.

I don't remember exactly what he said, but Bill Self's response on this topic was awesome.

His comments come from his interaction with them during the Hurricane Sandy telethon. He's probably just upset that none of them knew who he was. Heck, WCS didn't even know who Laettner was.

In regards to the "didn't know who he was" comment.

UK is doing these kids a disservice IF they are not having someone remind them of certain things when they are going out in public. As someone in the biz told me it would take Duane Peavy 2 minutes after a practice to tell them that Sean Woods is going to be at this telethon and his rafter hangs in the rafters at Rupp so he's part of the UK family and tradition and to make sure you introduce yourself. IF(and we don't know) that did NOT happen then someone failed the players.

To me what has become of the name KENTUCKY across the chest for these kids is the ultimate stepping stone to the NBA. To wear that you possess something unique and called upon to uphold what it means to wear KENTUCKY. It means something totally different than what it did for Woods and what we are all taught that it is supposed to mean; but, I disagree that it means nothing to the kids.

Good enough for me. Move on. Making a mountain out of a mole hill ONLY reflects on UK fans.

I can agree on that. Even as a non-UK fan it's sad the system has made the KENTUCKY brand mean what it now does.
