Lakers hire D'Antoni

Maybe I'm naive because I dont' watch the NBA like I did when I was 13, but do NBA coaches really have many disciples? That seems more like a college coach thing.

Good point. But there have to be coaches who know the triangle and would run it as their offense. Maybe there are a half dozen teams running it. I don't follow the NBA close enough to know.

He really doesn't have anyone around the NBA that would be considered his disciple other than Kurt Rambis and Brian Shaw. I'm not 100% sure but I don't know of any teams that run the triangle. You need a dominate scoring guard (Kobe, MJ) to make it work.

I know you are a big NBA guy. Doesn't that surprise you? As much success as Jackson had with that offense you would think teams would try to do something with it.

I think teams have used it in the past and a few might now but it just hasn't been that successful. He's the Zen Master for a reason. :D Tex Winter is truly the mastermind behind the triangle. Phil gets credit for it but that's who is the brains behind it.

Phil probably wanted 15 million a year to just coach the home games. He despised traveling his last couple of years.

And all player control.

I did see on the bottom line that he requested something to do with travel and more control.

I bet the only team Phil would coach at this point would be the Nuggets.

At some point they have to move away from Phil and they have with this move IF they stick with D'Antoni.

Screen roll is good for Nash, Howard, Gasol, but the rest of the roster is not a screen roll roster. No outside shooters and Kobe isn't going to like it at all.

See the New York Knicks.

I agree with this somewhat but it won't be anything close to the Knicks. They didn't have guys like Nash, Howard, and Gasol. It won't be ideal for Kobe that's for sure.

Why not? This offense turned Joe Johnson into a hot commodity. Plus Kobe has a ton of respect for D'Antoni so it's a win-win in my eyes.

That's true but Nash is going to have the ball in his hands a lot more. Kobe will have to learn to play off the ball which is a good thing if he figures it out. I meant bad thing for Kobe scoring wise. Good thing for Lakers fans. :D

4 years - 45M, the 4th year is a team option.

Not sure if that is right or not. Seems insane to give him $10M a year.
A league source said D'Antoni has a three-year deal worth $12 million and that the fourth year is a club option.

That sounds better.

Howard = Amare

Nash = Lin/Nash

Kobe = Melo/Johnson

Gasol = Lee/Marion

I'n not saying the talent level is the same as the guys listed but the team makeup is very similar.

They have 0 outside shooting though.

They are pretty limited as far as shooters but scoring was never the problem in NY, it was defense. The Lakers team has a huge advantage over those NY teams. Howard and Amare aren't even on the same planet. Amare couldn't guard a Teletubby while Dwight is one of the best defenders in the league. Nash is a liability on D but it makes it really nice to have Dwight and even Gasol back to protect the rim.
