Just was wanting some thoughts on who should win this prestigious award this year. I honestly think the most talented player in the state is AJ Slaughter, but he hasnt been to the state tournament and if he goes this year then he will have a chance. Walt Allen is the leader at this point because of what he did last year at Rupp.

Pat elliott at Pendleton County is having a great year. Averaging 17points and 9 rebounds and 4.5 assists playing the center position. pendleton is currently ranked third in the state according to the Cantrall ratings. Tyler Mains is having a great year as well. Averaging 14.5 points per game and 5 assists a game while guarding other teams best players.

Walt Allen at South Laurel is having a good year. However, since SL has not reported their stats to the KHSAA website, I have no idea what he is averaging right now. Maybe JimSchue or Les know.

I don't have any firm stats, but I can only think of two games where he's scored fewer than 20. I'd say it's in the neighborhood of 20 pts, 8 rbs.

I think walt allen will end up winning it but i really feel like he is no where near one of the most talented players in the state. He is a very solid high school basketball player, but will be mediocre at the next level. He is undersized for his position, slow, and not athletic. I am not downing him because he is a wonderful high school player but i would rather somebody else represent our state against Indiana. He is well deserving though because of what he has done for his team over his high school career. I also feel that South Cannot compete with Scott County because Scott is to athletic for them at every position.

Have you seen him play? He more than makes up for his "lack of" athleticism with his basketball smarts. Incredible decision making for a high schooler.

Yes i have seen him play and have played against him. He is a very smart player and uses his body very well. He knows how to score at the High School Level. All I am saying is that he is not the most talented player in the state. He will win Mr. Basketball because they will make it this year and they won it last year and him being MVP helps out tremendously.

Athleticism is not the end-all be-all factor in winning basketball games. All it takes is disciplined offense and solid defense and athletic teams fold over like a cheap suit because they aren't getting the easy baskets they feast on against teams dumb enough to try to run with them. Make the athletic teams work for shots in a half-court set and they can't handle it.

Don't be suprised if Walt Allen has a great college career at the Division II level. He's already signed with Presbyterian College in Carolina, and I think he'll be a solid player there for 4 years. He might not have the most athletic body or superb quickness for that level, but I believe he will do great. He has already proven to thousands of people that he can dominate at the HS level.

Walt is a born winner and I think that will carry with him to the next level. Right now he is definitely in 1st place for Mr. Basketball, and I think KY will need him to have a better chance of beating the Indiana All Stars.

South may or may not be able to compete with Scott County. I dont think that really applies to this thread.

As far as Mr. Basketball goes and the above bolded statement..... I believe Walt will win it if SL continues to do well this season and makes a deep run in the state tourney. I personally hope Walt wins it and wish him the best of luck. If anyone deserves it it is Walt and I can think of no other player, or person, that would represent our state best (on and off the court) as Mr. Allen. He is as great a person as he is a player and I wouldnt be suprised if he does some amazing things in the All Star game against Indiana. Walt is a winner on the court and in life and I think that is exactly what this state needs representing it.

Mr. Allen is very underrated athletically because of his size and the area of the state he is from. SL as a whole is underrated athletically. They may be a bunch of white boys and they may play smart and fundamentally sound and they may not be able to jump out the gym....... but they are pretty good athletes too. You dont win the state tourney and beat some of the teams they beat without being pretty athletic.

Kevin Lubrano from Dixie is having a solid season. I am not sure of his stats, but he has been putting up some impressive numbers recently. Are juniors allowed to receive this award?

MR. Basketball is voted on before the postseason tourneys.

From what I understand, Presbyterian is scheduled to move up to D-I in two years.
