Yep, that's what I said. SK beat NCC but the team Beechwood played tonight is better than the SK team Beechwood played.

Here are some of the game details for you.

 

Beechwood had a nice little drive to open the game but was stopped on downs around the New Cath 35. The Breds went 3 and out. Then the Tigers went 3 and out. Nussbaum hit one of the highest punts I have ever seen in high school and the Breds fumbled the reception, recovered by Beechwood at the 18. Three plays later Nussbaum bulled into the end zone. Sletto's extra point gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead. The Breds had a nice 40 yard run on their next drive but the back fumbled the ball at the 3 and the Tigers recovered.

 

The Tigers went 3 and out as the second quarter opened and it looked like good field position for the Breds. But Nussbaum hit a 70 yard punt that took the ball from the 10 to the other 20. No problem for the Breds as they moved the ball quickly down field keyed by a 35 yard pass play from Cain to Myers who was finally brought down at the 1. Cain sneaked it in on the second goal line play. With 9:12 to go in the half it was a tie game. Nussbaum was out of the game being checked by medical. Beechwood wasn't able to do much on their next drive and punted. The Breds made short work of the Beechwood defense without Nussbaum on the field. A 26 yard TD run by Hays made it 14-7 with 4:34 to go. Nussbaum came back in and Beechwood moved the ball before being forced to punt. The Breds moved from their own 13 against the prevent defense but weren't able to get into field goal range as the half ended, 14-7.

 

NCC received the second half kickoff and went 70 yards in 5 plays to make the score 20-7 after missing the extra point. Thacker scored the TD on an 8 yard run with a key play of the drive being a 44 yard run following a pass reception by Jacob Smith. Beechwood moved the ball downfield from their own 20 all the way to 1st and goal at the 5. They lined up in the wishbone formation and tried to power the ball in on 4 straight runs by Nussbaum. End result - no yards gain, Breds get the ball. This was the key possession of the game as the Tigers were never able to recover from not getting the TD. NewCath punted after getting one first down. Beechwood had good field position but struggled on the first two plays and then Nussbaum tried a long pass on 3rd down which was intercepted.

 

As the Breds drove the ball down field on their first 4th quarter drive, the rain picked up and things looked just as bleak for the Tigers. Hays scored on a 5 yard run with 6:36 to go making it 27-7 and that was ball game. On Beechwood's next possession the snap on on the punt sailed over Nussbaum's head to the 2. Hays ran it in to take the score to 34-7. It was subs the rest of the way with Beechwood's JV quickly moving downfield for a TD, a nice 7 yard run by Joe Studer. Final score 34-14.

 

Sorry I wasn't as sharp as usual on names and exact yards in the report. With the rain it was tough to keep notes and catch everything.

I don't think so. Beechwood tried to throw the ball a lot, maybe the most of any game all year.

Coach Rash wants to win every game, especially against New Cath. I believe he had 3 game win streak going against the Breds before tonight and those were tough, hard fought games. Tonight's game was also hard hitting. It looked like the normal Beechwood offense to me. And as Eye said, I think Beechwood threw the ball more tonight than any game I can remember this season.

They threw the ball more because NCC's defensive line dominated the line of scrimmage and they were having a hard time running the ball. Nussbaum took some really hard hits tonight. NCC was definitely the more aggressive team. Good Luck to both teams in the playoffs!

Excellent report, I was just about to type mine up but yours is spot on. The goal line stand by the Breds was big time backbreaker for the Tigers. Breds "D" finally coming around and the Freshman Jacob Smith is going to be a good one, kid can play. Good game from Hayes, but my God man hold on to the ball. And a tip of the cap to the most underrated player on the Breds team, Mac Franzen, he gets it done on both sides of the ball. :thumb:

 

Also if I don't mention my daughters boyfriend I won't hear the end of it, Tyler Lyon did a great job pressuring and getting to Nussbaum on numerous occasions and made one heck of catch with a defender draped all over him.

 

Hats off to Max Nussbaum, he left it all on the field tonight. :notworthy:

If Beechwood is one dimensional, that won't bode too well for them come playoff time. Frankfort will make them pay unless they can mix it up some.

NCC is playing with confidence and swagger. Early in the year people thought this team was soft. There is NOTHING soft about this team! Great game!

They need to find something in the passing game. The box will continue to be loaded and Max in the defense's sight until Beechwood gets effective passing the ball.

I will have to say, they did a good job on the screen passes, but that's not going to get it done.

NCC really played well in all aspects of the game, more one sided than I thought it would be. Good Luck to Beechwood in their playoff run. If they can find someone to take the focus off #44 they can hopefully put together a playoff run.

Congratulations to the Breds; things are looking good to say in the least.

The Breds controlled the game. Not much you can say except Beechwood got whomped. New Cath is the best team Beechwood played all year except Cov Cath. I know Simon Kenton beat both NCC and Beechwood, but NCC is clearly a better team than SK IMO. The bad news for New Cath is now they won't win a state title, right?

One of my keys to the game. This team is a lot like the 06 team. Gelling at the right time, dynamic RB, strong armed Sr QB who replaced an incredible star. The defense is coming together. After the SK game, I knew that this team definitely had the look of a state contender. Now they just need to stay consistent, bc they are right there with OC and Somerset.
