So help me out then. Beechwood played Cov Cath at 4:00. Both of those teams played and won "playoff" games the previous week to get to that game, which I had heard was a championship game. So what was that game? I did hear that Beechwood beat Cov Cath in that 4:00 game but I don't know the score.

I wasn't at the game. I was in Somerset validating State Playoff games.

There was another thing that I was surprised to hear. In the Tichenor/NCC game, the PA guy was calling the plays as they were happening instead of after the whistle. The guy did a great job announcing the game. I just thought it was odd that he described the play, calling out player numbers, the play and directions of the play as they were happening. If you were on defense and payed a little attention to the guy you might have had a little advantage. Not that kids listen that much anyway. :lol:

I kind of wondered that myself. One would think at least one of the head coaches would have complained.

Watched a couple of 8th grade middle school football championship games last night at Beechwood. First up was the small school championship, Tichenor vs NCC. Was surprised how Tichenor dominated NCC, however the Pangallo kid for NCC is a HORSE and no doubt he will be a star as he goes forward at NCC. Also was impressed with the support Tichenor had in the stands. Future looks bright for Lloyd Memorial.

 

Next up was the 8th grade large school championship, Turkeyfoot vs CovCath. First, I've never seen that many "coaches" for a middle school team in my life as there were for CovCath. Now my main question, is there a limit to how many "non-coaching" personnel can be standing on the sideline during a game? At one point I counted 55 people, non-coaching types, standing on the sideline for CovCath.

 

NewCath middle schoolers only two losses were to Tichenor.

 

That's only if they stay and play for Lloyd and not find "greener pastures" elsewhere.

So far that has not happened at the 7th/8th grade level at Tichenor. That is why Lloyd is reaping a good year with some under classman. They have stayed since they started this program. Last group to have left was the Lions Senior team with Vocke on it going to BW with several other players. I think the kids are starting to buy into the Lloyd football program and coaching staff. Congrats Beechwood, Tichenor and CovCath on your championships. JD

To answer your question, Coach Wirth (varsity head coach) and some of his assistants and players were on the sidelines to support the 8th grade team. Also saw some teachers down there. Nice gesture by the varsity program to support the future Colonels.

The guy who was announcing the first game thought he was doing standup comedy. I didn't notice play by play in the 2nd game. I agree that these games should not called this way. You still see non professional announcing at high school games.

 

The guy that does most of the Beechwood freshman, jv and varsity games does a very good job. Great voice and tries to get the calls correctly for both teams.
