Patrick Towles is frustrated

Featured Replies

Smith sprains an ankle and then Whitlow limping at the end of the game tonight... If it comes down to it, does Joker lift the redshirt over playing Newton next week?

They Whitlow came from a 6A Bama school. He has played against some tough teams. I guess he is more game ready?

PT was redshirted because he's the best prospect and they didn't want to waste a year. He is still the better prospect.

Would they be wasting a year if he was getting the minutes Withlow has already picked up to go with what he will see going forward? Are they going to start Towles next year anyway? The way it is setting up there will be a sophomore and a junior ahead of him with a decent amount of experience...

Had they known that Smith was going to be unavailable then they wouldn't have redshirted him IMO.

Regarding next year I still think Smith will start the season at QB. I think Smith is a good college QB and is going to get even better. I do not expect PT to be the starter next season. I also do not think Whitlow will be in front of him.

Fresh from Joker's mouth......

@KyleTucker_CJ: Burn Towles' redshirt? "Might," Joker says. "But we won’t do that unless Max is out for a while and ... unless we're going to play him."

That's what I am thinking.

Had they known? You always prepare for injury, and especially at QB. They did that with Withlow as they put him on the 3rd team taking those reps and elevated as needed. Very poor roster management if that is really your stance...

They were going to ride with Smith, Newton, and Whitlow. What is the issue with that if you're looking out for PT's best interests?

They knew Newton was horrible, that's part of the job. If you are rushing to get a freshman QB ready, as they were with Withlow, you get the kid you actually want running the show in that spot.

Answer me this. What does 3 months of running the scout team really prepare you for? You spend all of your time learning to mimic the next QB on the schedule. Time better spent running the 3rd team and being ready to execute the offense going forward...

Newton was obviously going to be the backup until he either a)proved again that he wasn't good enough or b)Whitlow learned enough to be ready.

Fair question to ask. I still think it prepares you just from seeing D1 defenses (insert UK joke here) and getting used to the speed. Running 3rd team doesn't seem like it would get you many reps.

Redshirting him was the right move IMO.

It says a lot that Whitlow was the one being prepared as the 2nd string backup. If you have someone who you think is the future at the position, you get him ready instead of someone from the same class. Like GT said, that would give them two players ahead of him with good in game experience. It would say even more if he chooses to go with Newton over Towles next week if he has to.

I don't expect to see Newton ever take a snap at QB for UK again.

They went away from Newton as the backup in about 5 minutes, right? They knew he wasn't good enough.

Towles will play this year and not redshirt with how this is going. You have now stunted his growth when he does play as significant time was used getting Withlow ready instead. A kid that wasn't the known QB of the future over the one that was.

I'd be with you if it wasn't Withlow put in this spot. They put a true freshman QB in position to play, and it wasn't Towles. That is bad preparation from Joker and his staff...

Here is a stupid question... Could it be that the UK staff have more confidence in Withlow than they do in Towles at this point in the season? Joker's future in coaching is on the line right now... If Towles in the best option for UK at this time then why would Joker not burn his redshirt status and get him on the field ASAP? The only answer I can possibly see is that Joker and UK think Withlow is a better option for the team right now.
