September 26, 201213 yr I grew up in Cleveland and it was treat to watch him play, especially when it was him and Alomar up the middle. I think he's in. He was the best defender at the 2nd toughest position in the game for over a decade. I know he grew up idolizing Concepcion. Hopefully they both eventually get in.
September 27, 201213 yr Vizquel has better numbers than Concepcion and Ozzie. And he played in a hitter-friendly era.
September 27, 201213 yr And he played in a hitter-friendly era. More of a homerun friendly era. Vizquel's offensive game was not helped by the smaller ballparks and might have been hurt a little bit in comparison to Smith and Concepcion with the move away from turf fields.
September 27, 201213 yr I think he's borderline, but voting for him is certainly defensible. I can work with this. Not sure I would vote for him, but I can see a legit argument being made. The thing I remember about Vizquel is that he went through a stretch from the mid 90s to early 00s where he was considered the best defensive short stop in the game. Never good behind the plate and he has hung on to play about 4 more years than he should have, that is why I do not give credence to things like "he just passed Babe Ruth in hits".
September 27, 201213 yr I was (and still am) a Big Red Machine fan and I love Concepcion. However, if you replace Concepcion with Vizquel on the 75-76 Reds teams I think Cincinnati would be just as good if not better.
September 29, 201213 yr I was (and still am) a Big Red Machine fan and I love Concepcion. However, if you replace Concepcion with Vizquel on the 75-76 Reds teams I think Cincinnati would be just as good if not better. Concepcion was well known as a clutch hitter and filled that role well for the Reds. Don't think you could ever accuse Vizquel of being clutch. I might give him the nod as being a slightly better hitter than Ozzie Smith.
September 30, 201213 yr Conception and Vizquel have almost identical career stats offensively, with Vizquel having the edge in AVG & OBP and Conception the nod in SLG. Vizquel has more stolen bases, but Conception was not called on to do that as much (Davey actually has a better stolen base %age). Vizquel has struck out 100 fewer times than Conception despite having 1800 more at-bats! Add to this a .985 fielding %age to .972 for Conception (with arguably better range for Vizquel also) and I would have to take Omar. If Gary Carter gets in the Hall then there is surely a place for Vizquel.
