It's tragic, but I can't fault the police with only the minimal details presented.

 

Seriously? Two able-bodied police officers that knew going into the situation that the guy had one arm, one leg, was comfined to a wheelchair and was mentally unstable. Yet they are so unprepared that they let him trap one of them in a corner and then are forced to shoot him in the head because they were in fear for their lives? They knew what the situation was going in. They should have been better prepared. Like I said if this were just a response to the man's residence and they didn't know if he had a gun or something I could understand a little bit better. But this was a call to assist someone at a mental home. How do you allow someone with one arm to chase you down with his wheelchair and then attack you? He only has one arm. He cannot do both at the same time.

I think that it's easy for me to imagine what I'd do when I am not actually part of the situation. It's quite another thing to be part of it.

If two able-bodied officers with a total of 4 arms and 4 legs are so imcompetent and unprepared that they allowed a wheelchair bound mentally ill person with one arm and one leg put them in a situation where he had to be fatally shot at best they should lose their jobs. Do most officers not have some of these items at their disposal: pepper spray, batons, tasers and kevlar vests? This is not a guy that lept out of the darkness and got on top of one of them. This is a person who could not physically wield a knife at the same time he was approaching them. And if he did approach one of them where was the other one and why did he not simply pull the chair back--the guy was on wheels after all. Don't you think that they should have, I don't know, come up with a strategy before going in there? Complete incompetence.

Again, it is quite easy for me to sit here and tell you what I would do from the comfort of my computer. It's quite a different thing to actually be in the situation and have to respond.

Like almost all other police related shooting, I don't feel I have enough information to make a judgement.

Actually, I've known several people who propel themselves using their legs. In fact, since he was missing an arm, this is likely the mode of mobility he used -- unless he used an electric. I think you underestimate the abilities -- and in this case, dangers -- of a person in a wheelchair. Just ask my brothers about our childhood.

It was a call for a combative resident at a home for the mentally ill. This was not at a private residence, they knew not to expect rational behavior at the very least. They also knew this wasn't a guy waving a gun around. Answer this question : If this had been two orderlies that had shot him dead don't you think they would have already been arrested?
