Oh yes, it is once again time for the yearly Raceland/OPEN thread.

 

Raceland will battle their arch enemy OPEN this week. This series has become one of the states most heated and most discussed rivalries, with neither team ever able to get a win. The series now stands at 0-0-42. Sooner or later one of these teams will have to break the tie and get a victory, will it be this year? I don't know. Raceland is good, but OPEN is always a formidable opponent.

 

SOME CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING THIS CONTEST:

1. It seems that there is some speculation that some of OPEN's players should not be allowed to play. We have the obvious problem of OPEN having open enrollment, with what appears to be no boundaries bringing players in from virtually everywhere. We all knew that the allegations would eventually surface with this issue and it seems that this is the year.

B. A court injunction has been acquired by OPEN to allow some players that have been previously ruled ineligible by the KHSAA to play. That will be a court battle, but I don't know if that will be decided prior to this Friday's matchup or not. Stay tuned.

3. Film trading has been a sore spot for the Raceland coaches this year. It seems that OPEN has sent Raceland game films that have no players on them, just an empty football field filmed for two hours. Then OPEN's coach called other schools and asked them to give additional films that they had received from Raceland so they would be better prepared. Quite unethical on OPEN's part, but I don't think anything will be done about it.

IV. For the above reasons, some schools have chosen to not play OPEN. Some state coaches have chosen to play two scrimmages instead of playing them. But, you know Raceland, they don't duck anyone, they chose to play only one scrimmage just to make this match up happen. I think you will see more coaches eventually choosing the two scrimmages instead of playing OPEN because of their unethical behavior. Eventually OPEN will have to travel to Columbus to play feeble private schools just to get games. You can't really blame the Kentucky schools, OPEN gets what they deserve.

 

SOME KEY MATCH UPS FOR THIS GAME:

Tackling - in last years matchup it looked like Raceland was tackling air. I don't know if the players were just tired, or OPEN was that good, but Raceland has to run down those OPEN players.

Receivers - luckily for Raceland, they had receivers open all night long and were able to complete passes as if they were running on air. That is what kept the Rams in the game.

Open field tackling - Really? Do I need to say more.

The Crowd - Last year the stadium was near empty, just some fans walking the track and a few students sitting around. I don't know why this game has lost it's draw, but there needs to be support on both sides.

Yea, I think Russell dropped both OPEN and Raceland. Maybe they didn't like it that Raceland continued to play OPEN.

Fairview had open their schedule earlier in the year. How did they do against them?
