In total, Beechwood and Cov Cath have played 31 times (tonight will make 32), and going into tonight Cov Cath leads the series 17 wins to Beechwood's 14 wins. Pretty close, all in all.

 

Still, after reviewing things, it looks (to me at least) like the series may be leaning heavily towards Cov Cath with 7 wins out of the last 8 games. That makes me wonder...as great a job as Beechwood does every year of putting out a great team from their small school, is the matchup against Cov Cath one that they want to keep scheduling? How about if Cov Cath wins the next 2 or 3 years as well?

 

Conversely, if Cov Cath keeps winning this game year after year, does Cov Cath want to remove the single-A school from their schedule and search for a more similarly sized 4A or 5A team to play? How about if Cov Cath makes their projected move up to 5A in the next 2 or 3 years?

Why would either want to suspend it. With exception of 2006 and 2009, every game has been close. It's not like CC has been beating them 40-0 every year. Surprisingly, it looks to me like they're pretty evenly matched in most years. A large private 4a school should beat a public 1a school every year and it really shouldn't even be close, but, I'm sure Beechwood understands that and they use that game to find out what there weaknesses are. You can't find those things out by playing cupcakes. If anything, CCath may want to get out of the series, because if they win, it's expected, but, if they lose, it should be embarrassing to them. On the other hand, Beechwood has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Love this series! Great job on putting the scores and coaches in. I hope the game continues. I think tonight could get ugly for the Beechies.

 

Talent and coaching have much to do with who wins IMO. For the Tigers, their biggest non districy games seem to be CCH and NCC.

I have always thought that CCH has more to lose in this game than Beechwood. That's just due to the perception of the class size. In theory, CCH should WIN every year. The reality is that its a great matchup.

 

While there have been some blow-outs, this is traditionally a great game between similar teams. I think either team would be crazy to end the series. As long as we stay away from the ugliness of 1999 and 2000 that led to the suspension of the series, I think its a great thing for both schools. I say "schools" because this is a great neighborhood rivalry where the boys and their fellow students get to play against Friends, Neighbors and the kids they grew up playing sports with and against. It's about bragging rights. It's about great competition. It's about School Pride. Quite simply, it's about everything that is right with High School sports.

 

Tonight is likely going to go the Colonels way, but you won't see the evident in the Beechwood student section. They will be there in dressed to match whatever theme has been planned and they will be not sit down until the game is Won or lost.

I think where were some unsportsmanlike conducts that suspended it. Wasn't it by the students on the field before tha game or something? And wasn't there some vandalism done? Please help me remember the details.

There were some windows broken on a Beechwood schoolbus, and there was spray painted graffiti on Cov Cath's new track.

I'm not sure about the on-field ugliness. That should be easy to deal with. I do remember Vandalism. Students from both teams Vandalized each others schools and property. I don't remember the details. I do recall the damage was significant enough that Police were involved. Spray Painting and destroying school property.

 

I can tell you that during those years was the only time I was disappointed with the CCH fans. I was walking on the field with my Son who was 4 or 5 at time and had some CCH students tell me "Get the F off our field." It was the first and only time I have witnessed anything like that from CCH kids.

I do agree that it has been a little off the past couple years. But there is so much more to this series. It's the kids growing up with each other and the two schools dislike each other but still have a respect for each other. And it's still always close games.

I do not think ANY school hurts itself by scheduling Beechwood, regardless of their classification. The tigers have a quality program, and if you beat beechwood, even in one of their DOWN years, you have beaten a good football team.

I was reading the Beechwood and Cov Cath threads, and got to thinking about this thread again. Thought it might be worth bringing back up.

 

From the talk of things, Cov Cath is poised to show off a great team with a fair amount of talent across the board. They also have an improved schedule from the past couple of years, strengthening their schedule with Ryle in place of Campbell County, replacing a very weak Pendleton County matchup with Henderson County, and swapping their LaSalle matchup with Moeller (I decision that I would personally argue against, although admittedly I'm not sure if it was a choice driven more by desire or necessity). Beechwood is replacing a lot of starters this year. Their schedule this year will be largely highlighted by the annual Beechwood/Cov Cath game, as well as solid matchups against Franklin County, Dixie, and New Cath, and the prospect of a trip to Mayfield in November.

There are so many question marks on both teams, I think it is very difficult to predict this one at this point in time. My gut feeling at this time is I expect a competitive game till the end this year.
