With a 15 game losing streak that appears well on it's way to 21, alumni (including me) have started talking and asking if it is time to drop football from GC's athletic program.

 

No, it gives Ryle a team they can schedule and hope to beat.

 

Just kidding. I would never want to see any school drop football. It will come around sooner or later.

For three or four years people thought the same about Paris, that they should consolidate with Bourbon or drop the program now their 3-0. Hang in there G.C.

We will not drop football we're in a slump okay a deep slump. Everyone affiliated with football knew this was coming. Our previous coach ran off alot of talent. We do need some changes. I like coach Mullins he's a mentor to those players and a class act. I hope he can win a couple next year. We play Grant this Friday if we lose that one it'll be another winless season.

I too like Coach Mullins. I hope the administration gives him time to fix things. I think he can, he is a home town coach that the kids can identify with. Fight for him.

I would say the biggest problem use to be parental intrusion. Now, I would say the lack of assistant coaches and overall attitude of the kids on the team. GC had a bye week in week 3 and 7 kids missed up to 3 practices each to attend the County Fair. GC is a 4A school playing with a roster of+/- 40 kids in all 4 grades. Now, I don't know any answers and I don't pretend to have solutions but I started this thread to see if anyone has an idea of how to "fix" a program that has an At-Large State title in it's trophy case and a ton of talented kids that have played. So, if anyone has a suggestion, the thread is yours.

As of the last class/district realignment, GC had more boys than any Kentucky school in this area. More than Ashland Blazer, more than Rowan County, more than Boyd County, more than Johnson Central. My son who plays basketball and football at Greenup tells me there are tons of athletic kids that walk the halls of Greenup that play nothing and never have. I bet if you looked at the percentage of males that participate in sports compared to the total male student enrollment, it would be a very small percentage. Losing kids to soccer has hurt the football program. As far as football currently, in my honest opinion, i'm just not sure how high the natural football IQ of the players is. This has a lot of causes but it's is what were looking at now. With the exception of just a few, it just isn't very high.

 

Things that are basic to kids in other programs (for example, seeing uncovered receivers and picking them up) just don't come naturally. I'm not sure what the answer is. I don't think dropping football would be the answer. We would transfer the second that decision was made. The out of district schedule will be revised next season and maybe that will help. It's a frustrating thing to be involved in especially when I and my family have been 100 percent Greenup County so many years. You feel like your always saying we'll give it a chance next year, maybe there's hope, and nothing ever changes. It's frustrating.

Is it not forseeable that this could hurt other athletic programs if these kids chose to go to a school where they could still play football along with the other sports?

 

If my son loved laying football and Greenup took that opportunity away from him, I would have no issue letting him go to a Russell, Raceland, or even a Wheelersburg (OH) so he could have the opportunity to play the game.

I know we are both big proponents of football and my argument for the sport is, the football field is as much of a classroom at the science lab and the English room. The football field should be used to make quality people. If that is done, the wins will come.

 

I know right now of several examples on this years team, even though they are not winning so far, its a huge positive they are participating and it just may make that little bit of difference to guide some kids the right way.

I agree with this. Another thing about Coach Mullins that people don't realize is he so detail oriented. His scouting reports are meticulous and he is doing everything he can possibly do to put these kids in a situation to win. He will win games and i hope it's at Greenup County.

Doesn't Greenup always seem to have issues with basketball coaches as well? Seems to me like the common thread running through all this is an administration that doesn't know how to run a sports program.

HCT, I really want to know if someone has an idea of how to fix things at GC. Thread titles like mine catch people's eye and cause them to read it and usually respond. When I was around the program, all the good ideas didn't work or weren't feasible.

There is an easy way to fix that problem. You run the ones that missed about 5000 yards apiece, or until they quit, and then you go on without them. This sets the example to everyone that expectations will not waver and no one is above the team. Besides, it doesn't sound like it will lose you games there anyway....

Without discipline talent is useless. That is a lesson the community will have to learn and get behind to have sucess.
