Final from DCM.

 

1st Qtr was pretty even with Highlands' Josh Watson breaking off a long TD run and the Highlands offense moving the ball effectively against Big Moe. Birds get down to the Crusader 2 yrd line on 4th down and penalty moved them back forcing them to kick a field goal. They were up 10-7 at that point but not for long.

 

Moeller's Crable at QB is a stud, he launched a long TD pass right before the half, a major breakdown in coverage though for the Birds. Shortly thereafter the Birds attempt a middle screen and a Moeller LB jumps up and snatches it out of the air and runs in for a pick 6. Crusaders scored 2 quick TD's there to go up right before the half 21-10.

 

The 2nd half the much bigger Crusaders did a nice job of hitting their big recievers and the RB's ran hard and were a load to bring down.

 

Birds hung in there though, Jensen Feggins is a stud WR for the Birds. He hauled in a huge 30 yrd pass for a first down in between two defenders along Moeller's sideline. He was blown up right when he touched the ball and it squirted in the air. Feggins had awesome concentration pulling it down. A couple plays later Beau Hoge connected on a long TD pass to #96 Alex Venneman.

 

Birds couldnt get within 10 points though the entire 2nd half.

 

Hoge connected on another long TD pass with Venneman hitting him in the back of the endzone in traffic. Venneman impressed me at WR along with Feggins.

 

Hoge got some good reps at QB and looks solid. Outside of a couple bad decisions with more reps (which he should get in blowout Varsity games over the next 2 weeks) he will get much better. He throws a nice ball and has decent legs.

 

Josh WAtson is a stud RB for the Birds. The kid is just now coming back from a major knee injury and he is the best downhill runner I have seen play at Highlands in a long time. He scored a late TD and ran in the 2pt conversion to end the scoring at 42-32.

 

This was a great test for the Bluebirds and they will get a ton out of this matchup.

 

Big Moe is just that, man they had a couple kids that looked about 6'6 230lbs playing DE and TE. Crable is a very tall QB who throws a great ball as well. He took a couple licks late in the game and left turning over to the backup. Im sure they didnt want to get him hurt. I would expect him to take over QB duties next year at the VArsity level.

 

Birds get much more out of playing games like this then they would playing Pendleton Co or Mason Co JV.

Moeller was HUGE!!! I could not believe how big they were. Saw about 5 or 6 kids at the beginning of the 4th go change into their varsity gear. I guess Moeller varsity is playing some team from Michigan after the jv game?

Yes they are. I saw a lot of that Moeller group in a freshman game versus Beechwood last year. As freshmen they were bigger than most JV teams and some varsity teams in N. Ky. How many players did they dress? They dressed 65 for their freshman team last year and said their numbers were down.

They didnt dress as many as I thought. I would say maybe 50 kids at best. Four of their big boys looked like they were heading for the concession stand at the start of the 4th qtr.

 

Their Running Backs were just punishers, no scat backs....just mashers.

Defensively I know the Birds were mixing in a lot of kids to get them snaps including a few Sr's that are trying to gain confidence or have been slowed by injuries.

 

Birds are not very deep at RB though. After Watson it looks like they really only have the soph Grau on that JV squad. If you think about their Jr class with Harris and Hayes....the entire program seems to be lacking depth at that position. Obviously the kids that are playing and backing up are doing a fantastic job but I just thought they would have more kids playing that position.

I think the lack of depth you speak of is playing different positions. The Soph class has Urlage and Schoeph playing defense. Senior class has Sidel playing a slot receiver. If need be, I'm pretty sure that they would be alright.

The good thing about the summary is that everyone mentioned, as far as I know, is a sophomore. That shows some strength in the sophomore class.

On the frosh level you also have 2 very good backs in Jared Daugherty and Nick Kendall....:ylsuper:
