Lexington Herald Football preview:

By Mike Fields — [email protected]

In Kentucky high school football, the powers that have been are still the powers that be.

Grand Poobahs Trinity and Highlands, who share the record of 21 state titles, once again reign supreme in the pre-season.

Trinity is an overwhelming No. 1 pick in Class 6A as it chases its 10th championship in 12 years under Bob Beatty.

Highlands, the top choice in 4A, goes looking for its sixth consecutive title and 11th under Dale Mueller.

In 5A, perennial powers Bowling Green and John Hardin head the field.

In 3A, Central is favored to win its fifth title in six years, with Belfry, runner-up three times in the last five years, in the mix again.

In 2A, the coaches like traditional powers Newport Central Catholic and Danville.

In Class A, Mayfield and Beechwood, who own 19 titles between them, are ranked 1-2, with defending champ Hazard on their heels.

(Rankings based on a survey of coaches.)

I'm amazed Danville is higher than Somerset in 2A. Even if it is just one spot. Somerset has owned Danville these last few years.

I think Mike failed to research 1A very much. He obviously didn't look at what teams have returning other then the top 3. I think he solely ranked the rest on how they did last season. A little disappointing.

It says right there in the article that the rankings were based on a survey of the coaches. Your beef should be with them.

Possible, but 1. Mike put his name on it, so he has to own it somewhat, 2. what coaches, the coaches poll looks dramatically different. I think the disclaimer was just spreading the blame. Nope, by beef is with the known, and it's not a real beaf anyway, just disappointed in the final product.

I'm with ram. It doesn't say it was a coaches poll. It says it is "rankings" based on a survey of coaches. Sounds like Fields made a few calls, asked some (who knows how many or which ones) coaches about their thoughts, and formed his rankings based on the info gathered.

That's because the other coaches poll was done by the Courier Journal. Both were based on rankings turned in by coaches. Should Fields have just canceled his preview if he didn't agree with the results? You might not like the results but the coaches are to blame, not Fields. Besides, preseason rankings mean nothing they're just good for discussion. Heck, the BGP 5A rankings have Southwestern ranked 8th and the player that is listed as the key to their season no longer plays football. If BGP can't get them exactly right how are a bunch of coaches that are mainly focused on their own team going to do?

You seem to be taking it a lot more personal that I am. I'm just saying I'm disappointed in the product, nothing more, nothing less. Sure polls are not good for much more then talk, but that is why we are all members of BGP, to talk about such things, but I doubt you will find any other poll done in the state that has much similarity to this one other then the top three teams. It's not an accurate depiction of the class.

As for the BGP Rankings, one player quit playing and BGP didn't know about it. That happens, but I bet BGP will own that mistake and lay on the shoulders who helped make the rankings.

Kind of surprised to not see Conner ranked in the top five for 5A.
