I admitted that they led the league last year in that category but it's not the same team. Ludwick, Valdez, Harris, Meso and Frazier are all new and Cozart missed most of the 2nd half after a short period up with the team. Votto and Phillips will go 1st to 3rd and Bruce and Cozart aren't afraid to advance either but the rest of the guys seem to be station to station guys. This team seems to wait on the long ball and when it doesn't come they struggle to score runs. That's where the manager comes in with having the nads to put runners in motion and steal a base when you can. Even Stubbs seems reluctant to steal a base and he had 40 last year. Like I said this is a boring team to watch offensively.

This team struggles to score runs because their average with RISP is terrible, not because it is a station to station team.
June 23, 201214 yr It depends on 3 things; the jump, the speed of the runner and the strength of the arm on the fielder. If I'm coaching and Stubbs gets a decent jump with his speed he's going. That was not Jay Bruce in center field it was Denard Span who is not known for a big arm. In this case since Dusty elected not to run for Rolen, Berry made the right decision because while a good base runner Rolen is not fast by any means and probably would have been thrown out a big majority of the time. Span got a great jump on the ball, and had all of his momentum going right towards home. It didn't matter who was on, sending the runner there was a bad move...

The very SECOND I saw Bill Bray come out of the pen I was shocked (although I guess I shouldn't be with Dusty). Bases loaded, 1 out in a one run game and you bring in a guy that hasn't pitched all season. Really? Who didn't know that was going to end badly? The rest of the game I was to upset to enjoy it :lol:
June 23, 201214 yr The throw was off line. If Rolen had been sent, he would have scored. I do not take issue with Mark Berry not sending Rolen. If a speedy pinch runner is on base...who knows. No he still would have been hosed. The throw was like 3 feet up the line. Rolen would have just been out way before he made it to the plate.

He had little room for error and I don't think his 5 BBs in 7 2/3 innings of minor league work prior to being activated excited me that he was really ready to face that kind of pressure. Once again as SSC mentions time and again I think it shows how Dusty utilizes his pen by targeting pitchers only in certain spots. Maybe Marshall was better served to be in that situation but it wasn't late enough in the game in Dusty's eyes.

Maybe Marshall was better served to be in that situation but it wasn't late enough in the game in Dusty's eyes. Marshall is exactly who I wanted to see there. If they insist on Chapman only being used at the end of games then that was a game changing situation where I'd much rather have Marshall in the game and take my chances as opposed to a guy who hasn't faced a major league hitter all season.

I'd be willing to bet that Dusty will never use Marshall in the 6th inning no matter the situation. How would you like to see this occur in the playoffs? I say use the best man for the situation regardless of the inning. For years Joe Torre brought Mo Rivera into the game in the 8th because he knew how critical the situation was. Not too many people criticized him for doing that did they?

I sure hope he realizes that he needs to give his ace the support to stop this skid and not depend on him to throw a shutout like his last time out. He will probably rest Votto today because he looks like he needs a break again and Cairo needs some ABs. And I do think that Votto could probably use a day off but not today.

He looked shaky and clumsy. Definitely not a good way to bring someone in for their first game. Btw, saw a guy catch two foul balls last night. Don't think that feat will make ESPN though.

So if we need Marshall in the 6th then so be it, that in essence was the difference in the game last night. That isn’t to say for certain Marshall would have got the job done, but he was clearly (in my eyes) the better choice.
