Highlands 6 Newport Central Catholic 5

May not have walked a lot, but at least two that he (or whoever was pitching for NCC) did walk scored (one in 4th and one in 7th). Walks kill, errors kill.

The team that usually only gives 21 outs in 21 put out attempts comes out on top in HS baseball. Not a real big secret especially come playoff time.

Give a team like CovCath, BW and usually NewCath 26 or 28 outs per game and you are done, no two ways about it.

This is the stat that has been jumping off the page for Highlands recently is they are willing to give just 21 outs per contest.

Throw in some guys getting hot with the bats late in the season, some Frosh that are no longer Frosh this far into the season, an opposing team with an attitude that its "only HIGHLANDS" , a few errors here or there, get down a few runs, sun starts to set, sweat begins to beebee up on the forehead, coaches mouth gets pasty on third, no cosistenceny at the plate because of 3 completely different styles of pitching strategically spaced out, and few loud mouth parents in the stands, and all of a sudden, a team with a 20 plus win season that just hung 22 on the Greenies gets a lost and there was really nothing they could do about it on this day.

Now, not to blast NewCath, because they have earned everyones respect throughout the state when it comes to multiple sport athletics both boys and girls, a lost like this could be just enough to wake them up and go on a rampage through the Region and ultimately win the game that really means the most to advance. JMO

Congrats to the Birds! A very nice program win and continue to make noice next week! Fantastic to hear about the crowd I heard parking was routed to swim club (true fact lol). It is real nice to see the BIRDS of spring chirping.

Thats when you know your program is on the right track and you are moving on up when baseball fans park in the Highlands visitors football parking lot. :D

An absolute shocker here imo. Not taking anything away from the Birds win, just not sure how something like this happens. I guess this is why they play the games.

Not to ruffle any feathers, my comment is based on just the plain facts. Highlands is an extremely young team mixed in with a few veterans by default, but if this game would have been on the board in Vegas, Breds would have been favored by at least 4 just based on the multiple veterans that they bring to the table. JMO.

I know this game really doesnt mean much to some but it means alot to Highlands. Hope the Birds will enjoy the win tonite and put it behind them tommorow. Hopefully they can take full advantage of the win and the position that this puts them into going into the Regionals and make the most of it and keep building.

A very nice program Win for the Birds..:thumb:

Every game against Highlands means a lot on the Hill. This is a big win for a very young HHS young team, and a wake up call for NewCath. I look for the Breds to rebound. I look for Highlands to be in the hunt for the 9th region the next few seasons.

Excellent win for the Birds. Regardless of the sport, Highlands can always be counted on to scrap to the very end. :thumb:

Wow, in reading jpa's scoring summary, it sounds like NCC handed this game away. I don't believe HHS scored a single earned run. That's the stuff that'll drive coaches crazy!

Certainly sounds like that was the case in this one.

Highlands scored 5 runs in the 4th and 7th innings on TWO singles (and a bunch of errors/walks). Ultimately though, it doesn't matter how the runs scored, just that they scored.

Both games in the districts Highlands took advantage of poor defense and walks by the opposing team. Most of their runs against Newport also came off errors and walks. Especially the big 6 run second inning they had in that game. Thats why you play the game though, and as someone mentioned the team who plays smart baseball, plays good defense, and just don't beat theirselves will win more times than not. Highlands is showing they are a good team because they are playing smart baseball and not being theirselves. Congrats to them, and I hope to see them do well in the region!

That goes for HHS too. Doesn't matter what ones' record or history is. These games are special for the kids if not more for the fans and parents. LOL! Seriously, NCC will be just fine. Now HHS needs to take the next step and win a game in the region instead of just getting there as of late.

Congrats to the birds. Seems like Highlands is going to be good the next few years in Baseball good to hear that.

It could be a wake up call for Newcath. Good Luck to both teams in the Region. IMO sometimes losing a District finals

gives you a better Draw in the Region
