Hate to hear this. Coach Mitchell was all ways well liked.

Once again blame adults for a kids dumb mistake. Seems the parents should step in and defend him since their son made a dumb mistake and got a coach fired.

LCHS footbal coach fired » Local News » TheTimesTribune.com, Corbin, KYAfter 34 years of coaching David Mitchell was fired today at LC. Sad day. Coach Mitchell is Lynn Camp football, its sad that he can't go out the way he should.

The Knox Co. administration has wanted him out since last season, and from what I have heard, he would not go willingly, so they apparently found a reason and let him go.

In my opinion, the people with political clout in Knox County treat Lynn Camp and the Corbin area of Knox County like a "red-headed step child".

The highlighted quote above from LC99 is exactly right, it shouldn't have ended this way...

I agree they all ways have. I sure hate that for them. They belong to the same school system.

If they wanted him gone, why not just force him to retire?

The above statement is the way it is. I've known (Coached agsnist} David Mitchell for many, many years and this is a Sad way to go out. Good Luck David, you will be much better out of that situation.:isurrender:

The school system is very political, even more so than most, and the Superintendent is already on shaky ground and was afraid of the political ramifications of forcing him out.

It is such a load of crap from everyway imaginable. The administration is horrendous and I hope and pray for the day the state comes in and handles what desperately needs to be handled at this school and the neighboring school. It is a sad, sad way to go for a man who dedicated his life to a system and the kids to be put out. I wish the school board over here had the guts to address Hulett and company the way they they should. Knox County is ran so bad that I can not even begin to describe it with words. This is just another example of their superior judgement.

IMO this is a blessing in disguise for Coach. I am so sick of every stupid thing an individual does being someone else's fault. Has common sense died in this country? It has been dead in Knox County for well over 5 years now. Good luck Coach in all your future endeavors, and if you should ever find yourself across the sidelines from this bunch, pour it on. Loyalty died when the word "fired" finished echoing off the office walls. It has been a while since LC was LC and I don't see it ever being close to the same.

Sad day for football in SE Ky

It is indeed a sad day for football, but I think it goes deeper. Loyalty is a thing of the past, it is unfortunate that football even at the HS level has become a business. And like DaddyCat stated LC has not been LC for sometime. I saw some pics on a social site that had Lynn Camp pics going back to the 30s, Lynn Camp has a rich history with a great tradition. I will give Coach Mitchell credit he took complete responsiblity in a statement to the paper, but after 34 years I think he could have been given the opportunity to turn it around, he has had tough times in the past and has always been able to get things back on track.

My question is this: Do you really want to put yourself into a situation (politics?) like that if you are a young coach? If you are an established coach do you really want to take a chance on moving where you could be canned that easy? Will the administration give a new coach the support that they would need to get LC football back on track? With the rise of Knox Central football can LC keep their athletes so that they can compete?

Good Luck to Coach Mitchell, I hope you find a postition where you can instill the love of the game that you have in the youngsters of SEKY.

I could see Lynn Camp going after someone such as Willard Farris, who is a long time Corbin asst coach, for 2-3 years. He may be interested, especially considering that the asst. coaches at Corbin are being hit with a 9.5% pay reduction next year.

He actually coached there in the past, although I forget what years. Marlon Sams coached there and both his brothers are in the coaching business and I could see at least one of them being interested.

Shane Sams has been a high school head coach and was an asst. at South Laurel the last I heard. I didn't realize that Marlon had ever been a coach and cannot think of another brother of his that coaches. I wonder if there are any assistants who coached at Lynn Camp last year that may get a look.
