I believe that Alonso could've been a serviceable LF in Cincy

No ... his defense was a train wreck. And his bat is overrated.

 

All this being said the Reds should have been able to snag Latos by only giving up Volquez, Alonso and Boxberger...Grandal could've been packaged with another one of the Reds Minor Leaguers from a deep talent pool to snag a good LFer...

And what makes you think those deals could've been accomplished? You have to give up something to get something. The Padres weren't just going to give Latos away.

For one the Padres arent dumb they knew they were getting a former AS in EV to replace Latos...And I wouldnt put it past them that they believed with a change of scenery, a bigger ballpark and patience they were getting a pitcher that could be better than Latos...They also knew they wanted Alonso for First so that they could trade Rizzo for even more chips, they are rebuilding...They just traded one of theor best RP to the Angels for two of their better prospects and are now considering trading Hudson and Bartlett...

Lutz is very impressive he didnt even start playing baseball till his mid teens amd he held his own vs the Reds pitching in the futures game...Look for him to advance rather quickly now that he has his feet under him and no longer is a reds project...

EV has pitched 4 out of 5 games at pitcher-friendly Petco. In his one away game he pitched 5 and gave up 4 ERs.

EV is not better than Latos Nkufan.

He's 23 and in A ball ... not a future star.

I think Alonso is a solid bat but he's not the type of hitter you build a lineup around.

 

My only concern with the trade was getting rid of Volquez. He obviously had some issues with the organization (and vice versa) but the guy has electric stuff.

He would've never been better than Latos had he stayed in Cincy but now with a fresh start it wouldn't surprise me if he plays better in SD than Latos does in Cincy. I like Latos, im just saying 2-3 years ago most everybody agreed that EV was a stud as welll and his is still young with time to turn it around...

Volquez K rate has slighlty gone down while I think Latos has gone down more rapidly...not that those stats matter ks arent everything but in Gabp they are nice...also Volquez is returning from injury which isnt always easy and Latos is young with no reason to delcine in stuff as he has always been healthy...

Nothing is wrong with his stuff. He has hit 95 and 96 all year. Just because his k/9 is way off so far this year. It will be up by the end of the year.

In sports, you get paid for what you did "last year". Volqy wasn't doing it at all in Cincinnati last year...and wasn't really the two previous years either. I'm still okay with the deal.
