Here's a piece on the Reds 23rd Round Selection this year, Mississippi high school player Daniel Sweet...He still hasn't made up his mind yet on if he will sign with the Reds... He's committed to Youngstown State and is presently playing ball in Florida...

Sweet aroma of major league success » The Mississippi Link

Some interesting tidbits from the article...The five-year varsity letterman first took the outfield for St. Andrew’s Episcopal School’s baseball team and batted at the top of the order as a switch hitter in the eighth grade. As a ninth- grader, Sweet led the Saints offensively, batting .483 during the regular season and earning the Best Offensive Player Award.

Taking his talents to the Northwest Rankin Cougars, Sweet finished his senior season with All-District, All-Star and All-Metro honors. He earned a .377 batting average and as the team’s leadoff hitter had a .606 on base percentage. Sweet also led the team in steals, walks, runs scored and times hit by pitch. Sweet also graduated with academic honors and received the MHSAA Scholar Athlete Award.

Tucker Barnhart is the Baseball America Prospect Hitter of the day...

Tucker Barnhart certainly is having a June to remember. A .457/.510/.783/1.292 line on the month to raise his season line to a respectable .290/.383/.444/.826. His righty/lefty splits suggest he may want to give up on switch hitting though...

Vs Left: .135/.246/.173/.419

Vs Right: .359/.444/.564/1.009

Given those kind of results as a RH hitter vs LH pitching, I think he should maybe just hit as strictly as a lefty...

That doesn't scream "fastest guy in baseball" to me.

Are you being sarcastic ...That's pretty fast for a Freshman in HS...90 Feet is only 30 Yards, he is pretty fast especially when he exits the box as a lefty...Here is the entire link, Billy Hamilton on pace to break minor league stolen-base record - MLB - ESPN

Billy Hamilton can't remember ever running on a track, so he has no idea what his time in the 100 meters would be. There was a day, he said, that he was asked to run a 40-yard dash at a football camp in Mississippi.

"I ran a 4.5 flat," he recalled Thursday evening. "I was in the ninth grade."

That's a respectable time for NFL running backs. But that was six years ago and Hamilton, 21, is faster now, as he wrecks stolen-base records in the minor leagues. Not long after that conversation, he went 4-for-5 and stole two more bases for the Class A Bakersfield Blaze, bringing his season total to 82 -- in 67 games.

His next attempt will be his 100th -- he's been thrown out 17 times -- and Hamilton is swiftly approaching benchmarks established by previous generations of minor-leaguers. According to records maintained by Baseball America, Otis Nixon stole the most bases for any player in Triple-A since 1962, swiping 94 in 1983. Donell Nixon swiped 102 for Chattanooga in 1984, the most in Double-A.

If Hamilton remains in Class A for the rest of the season, he would appear to have an excellent shot at breaking the record for most steals for any player, at any level, since 1962 -- Vince Coleman's 145, set in 1983 for Class A Macon.

But Hamilton has given the Reds a lot of reason to think about promoting him, given his improvement at the plate. Hamilton is hitting .331 and, more importantly, has raised his on-base percentage to .416. He has 53 walks and could be on his way to 100 for the season.
