May 1, 201214 yr I guess after reading several threads in this topic, I find myself confused on who is allowed to be offended and who is not. 1 - It is ok for any black person to be offended by the use of the word "thug" 2 - Any black person should be offended if they are ever called "well-spoken" 3 - No Christian journalism student should be offended for any reason, especially if the reason is an insult to their Bible or Christian beliefs. Just checking to make sure I am clear on the new social rules...
May 1, 201214 yr I haven't seen any black persons here claim offense over "thug" or "well spoken." Some posters pointed out some perceived disparities in their usage along racial lines. Why does that upset you?
May 1, 201214 yr Author I tried to give a compliment and was basically accused of being a subconscious racist. That's what started my motor running. To my knowledge, it wasn't any black person who was offended by my comment. But the same people who judged that comment and who are offended on behalf of black people in general when the term thug is used are the same people who think the journalism students had no right to be offended. I find it quite interesting to say the least.

I remember people having a discussion about stigmas associated with black athletes, but I don't remember anything being directed toward you personally. I don't believe anyone was offended on behalf of anyone else either, just making some observations about society. What's wrong with hearing another perspective?
May 1, 201214 yr Author I find nothing wrong with hearing another perspective in general. But it seems contradictory to me for the same person to argue that thug is a racist term and should be offensive even when the intended audience may not be that which is assumed... while a speaker clearly making offensive comments at a specific group of people are told they should have thicker skin. The logic seems flawed.

And there is nothing wrong with disagreeing with the other perspective either.
May 1, 201214 yr Nothing. And there is nothing wrong with disagreeing with the other perspective either. Of course not.

My point was they need to get used to it, suck it up and deal with it if that's the field they plan to go into, because they'll be offended a lot throughout the course of the day-to-day functions of their job. I will say that our current society goes out of its way to find things to be offended over, which I find to be ridiculous.
May 1, 201214 yr I've been called a "Thug" by many females and I'm a white man from the south, Red neck country. My Bible is insulted every day, but by people who don't read/study it.

You can easily offend any group. I'm sure white men are offended by seeing me and my white honey out and about. Just as I am sure she is offended by by my use of the word honey. Not to mention all the black women whom are upset that I date a white woman and call her honey. Just as many men's groups are offended that I have to apologize for my unforgiveable masculinity. May 1, 201214 yr I would say everyone has the right to be offended, however I feel people are way too big of pansys these days. People really need to grow up as a whole IMO.

Apparently money cures being offended.

May 3, 201214 yr Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have made a career out of being offended. Apparently money cures being offended. I'm offended by your lack of perspective in saying that about these men. They've made a career out of bringing attention to people whom were offended. They nobody an apology, but I apologize for you not realizing there are two sides to all coins.
