Anti-Bullying Speaker Curses Christian Teens

Featured Replies

I'm wondering what the magnitude of the outcry would be if we were talking about, say, "Anti-Bullying Speaker Curses Muslim Teens."

I prefer to expect the best of people; so I'll say that the outrage would be just the same.

I would think those saying the students over reacted would also say the same of Muslims. I'd like to think that anyway.

So the anti-bullying guest speaker refers to some in his audience as "pansy assed?"

Sounds to me like they would have been wiser to walk out when he walked in. This guy has nothing to contribute to the issue he was there to discuss if this is his behavior.

They weren't journalists. They were high school kids. What's your profession? Were you prepared for all it's challenges in high school? Shoot, I wasn't prepared for mine until 4-5 years after I graduated college so I certainly don't expect it from high schoolers. I know the great majority of people in my high school journalism classes and organizations never got anywhere near it as a career. As I said, not sharing your beliefs is one thing, insulting deeply held religious beliefs is another thing entirely.

It's a national journalism convention they were attending. I attended journalism camps at WKU when I was in high school. Had I been fortunate enough to attend a national journalism convention in high school I wouldn't have walked out if David Duke was speaking. I'd have listened to every word. Just like the other 900 kids that stayed to listen to Dan Savage. You'll have to forgive me if I don't put listening to someone who doesn't share your beliefs as a life challenge in high school.

Crazy ain't it? The anti-bully speaker became the bully.

I'd respect his right to give his talk, I have been in many debates with people and as they speak I get ideas and it kills me not to have a release and ask questions.

Last year at the Kentucky State fair there was an Atheists Booth, and these people and I had a great time, but its hard for me when I try not to use scripture to debate with. Scriptutre to them is am non Issue.

PP, I've seen posts of yours in the past that make me question if you would sit there and listen to David Duke insult blacks. I am pretty good about listening to other's beliefs but there comes a time when you have to make a stand and let people know that you're not going to sit there and continue to listen to someone spout garbage. Each of us have our own threshold and I have no problem with those who felt their personal religious beliefs were insulted to such a level that they left. You and I may not understand that level of religious conviction but that doesn't diminish it.

I am a different kind of cat. Always have been. I'm not a walk out kind of person. People intrigue me. I want to know why they think what they think. I want to know why they say what they say. I want to know why they believe what they believe. Had I not enjoyed weed and beer so much in college I'd likely be interviewing someone right now that I probably despise. I loved journalism and I love asking people questions. Especially tough questions. I'm not diminishing anyone's religious conviction. I even asked Larry how he would have handled the situation because I wanted to know because he is a devout Christian that I can ask about this situation. To me this is a journalism situation and I agree with the others who say maybe those kids aren't cut out to be journalists. It's not for everybody.

I like Dan Savage but this isn't a good look for him.

Well done.

I'm not surprised by his actions. I did think he was smarter than he appears in this situation. I'd say he should be speaking to college age kids and not high school kids.

Well done.

Thanks

I meant it as a joke, but I'm not sure how true it is.

While I don't agree with the quotes attributed to him, I'm not at all opposed to opinions that differ from mine. I'm all for open dialogue, civilized discussion & dissenting viewpoints.

The venom he directed toward the teens that walked out goes totally contrary to the issue he is supposed to be combating.
