Paul Rains (Mercer County to Letcher County?)

I agree 100%, with both. The Booster Club is having to foot the bill for everything; from transportation to helmet reconditioning and everything in between. You can't ask for a better all around guy than Dennis Davis.
If they don't hire DD their crazy!!! They are gonna struggle to hire a quality coach with no budget, no jobs for assistants (or even for Head possibly), and looking at a potential state takeover. It's awful for the community!!!

I'm hearing Dennis probably won't get it though. Unfortunately. I agree that he should. No one will have the same passion for all around success at Mercer County like Dennis will.

Is this the Dennis Davis that played basketball and was a pitcher for Mercer in the mid/late 80's? I played against him in baseball back then. Really good athlete and seemed like a good guy.

He was also QB for the Scotties when they made a run to the Class A Semi-Finals in '86 but lost to Heath.

One Good Friend leaves Letcher Central and another takes over. Good Luck Paul, may you win them all.

Seems like outside of the first year, Mercer has gone to Hades in a handbasket since the merger.

Sad but true. And doesn't look to be getting better anytime soon.

I've heard some of the better teachers have left or are going to leave.

It's a mess there from what a parent has told me....he told me he was talking with another parent and the parent said he was glad cause they wanted a better coach than Rains. I laughed and told em good luck and I could prob get Mueller, French,etc....numbers for em to call. Smh

I think there is a small and vocal segment of supporters that want immediate results. The fact of the matter is/was that in 2008 we graduated like 30+ seniors. There aren't too many schools that graduate that many and keep going forward without taking a step back. We had the issue with Coach Weaver and then went with Mason. I know some of the Mercer people werent that enamoured with the program in 2009 & 2010 but there were things being put in place at that time that would have built the program (which is what everyone wants). The administration knew where the program was and the coaches at that time knew they would struggle in 2009 and thought they would improve a little in 2010 and then hit the 5+ win plateau in 2011. The fact was Mason resigns and then they hire Rains who stays for 1 season which is really bad for the program. I said it at the time that I thought Mason was doing better at building our program than a segment of the fan base realized. The numbers were going up in the weight room and then he handed it off to Rains who I believe if he had stayed longer we would have continued on the incline.

But now here we are and it is late in the game and where does Mercer turn?

I heard that former Bullitt East Coach Doug Preston is a possibility? Took them to the state championship and I believe had Western rolling as well. A very good inside source from Mercer told me this today.

The program has gone downhill since they pushed Marty Jaggers out.
