Past Injuries That Derailed NCAA Contenders

The 93 Tarheels. PG Derrick Phelps was fouled hard in the first half against Boston College and couldn't play the 2nd half. BC knocked off the Defending champs. The back up PG was hurt ealier in the year.

Do you mean the 1994 Tarheels? North Carolina won the title in 1993.

94 Tar Heels, right? They won it in 93 over the Fab Five & then lost the next season to BC in the 2nd round. I only remember because UK lost in the 2nd round also, to Marquette, just shortly before UNC fell. Made the UK loss a little easier to cope with.

UNC has had it's share of bad injuries. The '77 team lost Tommy LaGarde the last 1/3 of their season, and Phil Ford broke some fingers in the tourney I think. Still almost won, losing to Marquette in the final.

The aforementioned '84 team had a recovering Kenny Smith at the PG spot.

I'm sure there were others along the way.

Kenyon didn't break his leg in the tournament. It happened in the 1st half of a CUSA quarterfinal a week before the Big Dance began. Man I wish I could erase that week plus from my memory...

That UC team was really really good!! That would be like taking Anthony Davis out of UK's lineup in the tournament, the team still had enough talent to make a run but when you loose the player of the year it lets the wind out of your sails. It will be interesting to see if Marshall can play for UNC. They still have talent but I don't like their chances if he is not in the line up.

The awful thing is they were awarded a two seed for this. Should have been a one no doubt

Dale Browns injury hindered the Cats against the Fab 5 in 1993. UK's other smaller guards ( Ford 5'9" and Delk 6'1") couldn't do much after he went out of the game scoring 16 points combined in 63 minutes. Brown had 16 points going 4 for 6 on three's before going out of the game with an ankle injury I believe. He only played 27 minutes in a game that went to OT. BTW Mash had 26 points in that game before fouling out early in OT.

That is correct, I was a year off...
