  1. That call IMO cost Etown the champioship. Very bad call!
  2. I think Oldham will be the team to beat next year- I was impressed with how much they have improved skill wise from beginning to end of year and I thought they played SK very well in the region tourney. I would add both Jasmine Whitfield and Mary Dye to the player lists- both had good freshman seasons - region games were not their best but I think they will learn much and have stellar seasons next year.
  3. I agree - of all the high profile players there, she was by far the most effective. Good for her.
  4. If I read these correctly and take it all in, I would say that Miss Basketball has great stats AND her team winning against the best competiton (State tournament should provide that) is what it takes. Based on that, I would say the Matheis girl would be the winner. Rainey has great stats, and has for several years, but her team did not make it past first round of districts and I cannot remeber what her team did last year. Last year Tia Gibbs was behind Monique Reed, who led in both scoring and rebounding her junior year and was second her senior year, in most conversations about Miss Basketball until the state tournament but we all know how that turned out. Both Martin and Clifton are phenomenal guards but will have a tough time beating out Matheis. Jones is not in that tier IMO - she is a nice player and does have the team success to go with it. If they have a good run and win the whole thing- who knows. As for Tolliver, she is a nice player, has good stats, and had success with her school team being at state two consecutive years. Unfortunately, the 8th region is not a high-ranked competitive team/player talented region. You can be the best player of your region, which she is this year, no one to give her any competition for that award (maybe Fultz from Anderson Co.), but to be the best player in the state? There are some very talented players ahead of her-IMO. I will say that Whitney Ballinger, Carroll Co, was mentioned as a Miss Basketball candidate when she was a senior back two years ago and I wondered then how she got consideration or who threw her name in the hat. IMO if Ballinger was in the mix, I can see why you think Tolliver should be. I too would like to know who decides who is a candidate - is it just assumed or is there a committee that does that?
  5. Just some food for thought..... There are two different votings for player of the year- one done by the coaches within the region and the other is for the KABC which the coaches that are KABC members get to vote for the player of the year. Based on the number of KABC members within a school, you can have several votes within a school. Typically this is where some players that are less likely get enough votes, especially if all schools don't have KABC memebers. I know many high schools are not represented.
  6. In the first game against South Oldham, where they lost, I thought AC played better than last night with the excpetion of Davenport. She was in foul trouble the first time they met and went out early - she was the difference maker IMO last night. Both Brown and Fultz did not have great games last night- Fultz missed some easy shots. AC simply killed South on the boards and South had a far worse shooting night than they did against WV which is hard to do since that was pretty awful. South's lack of big time game experience really hurt them. At times it seemed like they were just throwing it toward the basket and not shooting it- very very ugly. They had so many first half opportunities but could not capitalize on anything. Good luck to AC against SK tonight.
  7. go to khsaa website: http://scoreboard.12dt.com/scoreboard/khsaa/kygbk08 Select spencer county for the school and scroll to the 8th region tourney - their game against SK results - within that you will see 2002 bracket with results - you can do this for district play as well. Hope that works - you're not old, you are experienced......ha
  8. Just looked it up and Spencer went to the region tourney back in 2002 - lost to Shelby Co in the first round - held at Bullit Central that year.
  9. I think that they went to the region tourney back in either 2001 or 2002 -that was the year they went 6-0 in district play when they were with the Buillit Co schools- they switched districts when Bullit moved to the 6th region. I think they lost the district final but still went to region - they had a 8th grader who ended up at Mercy - Jordan ?? - anyway, I do think that they went then.
  10. This was the first time that I saw WV play this year and I was very impressed with their team and I think your new coach is doing a great job. I have read some things here and there but I have to say, they had a game plan and played a very nice game. Your height is great and with some impoved guard play - handling the pressure and improved passing and you all will be a tough team to beat. South shot under 20% from the field for the game -may have only made one three pointer - missed several open layups - it was not a good shooting night - especially on their home floor. Youth almost caught up with them last night. They will need to do much better if they hope to tsay with Anderson on Friday night and make it a close game.
  11. Exciting finish- South had 9 point lead but Oldham tied it up with just under 3 minutes to go. Crazy finish - South up 48-47 with 5.1 seconds to play wiith McGuffin on the line shooting one - and -one. South players pulled off the line for the free throw, McGuffin misses, no one goes after the missed shot, McGuffin gets her rebound and puts it in - Beaudrie shoots a half court shot that draws rim but misses- what a finish- congrats lady dragons! All Tourament Jordann McGuffin - MVP Mary Dye - South Emily Housley - South Jasmine Whitfield - South Audrie Beaudrie - Oldham Emily Lape - Oldham Brook Leanhart - Oldham Nicole Bryant - North Allison Olive- North Callis - Trimble # 33 for Trimble - cannot think of her name ....sorry.
  12. Yes they will really miss her as a coach and with the new high school opening up in the next few years, there will be some tough years for sports and the talent pools will now be split by more than one high school. No more county dominance for Shelby. IMO this really hurt Oldham County when they had the first split back in the late 90's but the third high school was a real killer back in 2004. Can you imagine how good Oldham County would have been if they only had one high school - WOW!!!
  13. I would credit some of the ugly play of South due to the fact that the freshman make up a huge part of their team and it was their first post-season game-definitely some jitters out there by everyone. Not a pretty game by any means, but South lead by double digits most of the way with the big pull ahead towards the end. Not sure if the game was ever in doubt CM but I did say it would be a better game than the last time they met. They will be ready Friday for OC - should be a good game. It is usually an ugly game when these two teams meet.
  14. Way to go Lady Bears! So deserving - you have worked hard for years and now that has paid off. Congrats. I cannot remember a year that Shelby has not made it to the regional tournament- WOW!!! Sorry to see Coach Z have such a tough year- she is a fine coach and will be missed at Shelby Co.
  15. I heard the same thing Colonel Mike- I am very surpised that she is back- funny how things change when you lose.........
  16. I was very imperseed with the JV from AC- I heard that they also had a 5th grader out there.....wow!!! They were composed and handled the ball very well. Not to take anything away from AC but South does limit 2 of their better jv players to just 2 quarters per game and had another girl who has played the best for them as of late, who was hurt over the weekend, out with a knee injury that night. It was not a good showing for the South JV. Had South not dug such a deep hole in the first quarter- 11-0 or 16-0 ? before South even scored a field goal- maybe it would have been closer contest. Give AC credit, they came out and jumped on them early and South could never recover fully.
  17. I do agree that summer exposure helps a player along with aau play on a good team that gets some national exposure. However, I do think it helps to know someone who can get the word out about your player. I do think high school stats can get you some intitial attention but very rarely do they come to see you play at a high school game anymore unless you are one on the top of the top players. As for D1, size and atheticsim are big key factors along with the ability to score at will. D1 is big business, big time commitment, and not for everyone. Even the best players go D1 and transfer to a smaller school the next year for a variety of reasons - and it is not all about PT. I would say that alot of players who dream of playing college ball, dream about the big schools- UK, UL, Tennesssee,e tc. and sometimes the advice they get is not true to where the best fit is for them at the college level. They may be a star in their hometown or county but get them outside of that and they are not as strong or as skilled as they need to be. (It amazes me how many top players in the state cannot dribble with their left hand or make a left handed pass). So when the big schools don't come a callin'- they lose interest. It takes alot to get a D1 scholarship but you don't have to go D1 to have a great college career. There are lots of levels to play - D2, D3 and NAIA D1 & 2 - all have ways of offering scholarships either athletic or academic but many quality players can get a full ride and play basketball to boot. Nothing wrong with that. As for them missing players, I really don't have an answer other than they just didn't do their homework. Maybe they saw the player one time and formed an opinion which wasn't really accurate. Coaches are swamped with teacher responsibilities and don't have the amount of time it takes to promote thier player either. You have to look at stats to some degree as well - state scoring ppg, rpg, etc as well along with asking around. Sometimes it comes down to one player that they know and they might like their coach, school, or know their family member, etc verses another that they know nothing about, smaller school vs bigger school, etc. No one wants to admit that but it does happen, it is not who you are but rather who you know that can sometimes get you onto one of these selections. Sad.....but true.
  18. Really depends on what game you saw South play. They did not play all that well against Carroll and really only came alive in the last few minutes against Spencer, who sat back in a zone for most of the game. Anderson was by far the best I have seen them play and they are reeally starting to put things together as a team and have 5 starters who can all score and the subs that come in are pretty strong. With the loss of Reynolds for the season, one might of thought they would struggle, but they have played better without her IMO.
  19. I do think that North Oldham is much improved than when they played South Oldham earlier in the year. It was an easy win for South but they should not take them lightly. Bryant for North Oldham keeps improving and they have made some strides as of late.
  20. It was a very good game last night and I was very impressed with the play of the freshman for South. They are all capable of scoring which gives them lots of options. Stop one and someone else steps up. A luxury that South has not had for a few years. Fultz was held scoreless in the 3rd quarter - she had 18 at halftime and had a big 4th quarter scoring all her points after Davenport fouled out. She(Fultz) may not have missed a three point shot the entire game. She is a very nice player. Davenport never seemed to get into the flow of the game and fought foul trouble all night. Makes the region conversation much more interesting to say the least. Nice win Lady Dragons!
  21. Names are submitted by members of the Selection Committee as well as state representatives who religiously follow the prep scene in their areas. In addition, Sports America subscribes to every major basketball publication and is read very carefully by its staff to ensure that some deserving players are not overlooked. Many rising seniors make this list based on an excellent junior year or for having an outstanding summer participating in summer camps and AAU tournaments. First of all thank you paNDA for your detailed instructions on the selection process. It is quite and honor. With all that being said, deserving players are still missed. I believe that Jody Demling imay be someone who is one the state representatives for our area and I think there are some other names but I am not 100% sure. I was not aware that Blue Chip has anything to do with it. It is sad when a quality player that is deserving of at least being nominated (especially since there is not a limit for each state) is over looked but it comes down to someone's opinion. I have also heard that the high school coach can also nominate their player. There were several players left off last years nominations - Kelesha(?) Cook from Franklin Simpson and Lauren Jones from South Oldham High School are the two that I can remember off the top of my head but there were a few others. Both , Cook and Jones, made the KY All Star team and had stellar high school careers, and have D1 scholarships - just not sure how either on of them could have been missed. Unfortunately, it happens.
  22. Will be an interesting game tonight. I think the edge goes to Anderson.
  23. Does anyone know where any of the girls from SK will be playing college ball? Congrats on a great season, career and big win on senior night.
  24. It would be nice to get some better officiating for district play this year. That will make a big difference - boys teams tend to draw the better officials and it is about time that the girls get them as well.
  25. Carroll played very hard and came ready to play. South did not- they did not even wake up till late in the game and were lucky to get the win. Non-starters played better for the lady dragons. Carroll moved the ball well and Wallace, Curry, and Osborne all were impressive. Carroll is a much better team this year than last and they play well together. Coach Mefford does a great job!
