  1. There are many views flying around so I mind as well throw mine is as well. I know for a fact that Highlands and Conner both had the majority of their starting 5 for JV were juniors. When you have talented seniors who are going to play the majority of your varsity minutes - how are these juniors able to get the game experience that they need? PLAY JV!!!! When those seniors are gone, the juniors will have to carry the team the next year and will be unprepared if not given the opportunity. I don't agree with it. You would only cut a junior if they were not good enough to play JV- that is why they call it "JUNIOR VARSITY"- if there is a huge class of sophomores that is more talented, maybe but not as a absolute rule. The attrition with girls as they age through high school is high- 10 can very easily be 3 the next year- then where are you?
  2. Yes there are twins at Iroquois. Crazy8's happens to be one of my favorite card games - I follow the 6,7,8 regions and some teams from the 9th. Big fan of the game and have watched many of these girls since they were little playing aau ball.
  3. Since the 8th region is close to your heart Lunatic- I just read in todays's CJ that Lauren Jones guard from South Oldham High School committed to Austin Peay. :dancingpa Is that the first commitment for the 8th region? What about Gray from Shelby Co- any news on her?
  4. Well I see now that the rule has changed- that is great! Good Luck to everyone who is getting to go!!!
  5. What a popular thread this is! I agree with several of you - club sports(soccer and volleyball) in general have hurt hs girls basketball because the club coaches demand that they play because they "might" get a scholarship. So many girls are now forced to choose when they are just freshmen and their parents are made all sorts of promises of exposure, potential scholarships, etc. I agree with Luantic!!! I also disagree that girls basketball doesn't have as many scholarships to offer- that is simply not true. Perhaps there is more competition for those scholarships but there are plenty out there for someone who has the ability to play at several levels- NCAA D1, D2 and NAIA D1. Soccer may play more athletes but most of those players are not on full scholarships and they have to share. As for the exposre events it is a shame that KY players miss out and the rules should be changed to Oct 15- although, there are plenty of events in the spring and summer, what happens in the fall is the school finds out a player who they offered a scholarship is committing to another school and now they are looking to replace that player. These September events give them an additional opprtunity so that they can be seen and sign early in November. More and more players are committing extremely early- sometimes in their sophomore year - which is almost crazy but the competiton for the schools is all about who can get you first. It is sad that the KHSAA views that our talent level is not worthwhile enough!
  6. I agree that Oldham definitely presents a match up problem for every team in the region with their size in the post with their two big players- Melton and Huckvale- no doubt that they create some problems. I am just not confident in their overall skill level and think that they need to improve in their ballhandling and defense. If you can handle their bigs even with smaller players, they seem to struggle. They have some younger players coming in that will improve their guard play but I did hear that one of their big guard/forwards quit over the summer. Not sure if that is true or not.
  7. I think by far the top four team are: Anderson , Shelby , Simon Kenton, and South Oldham. The order could go several ways but I would have to give a slight edge to South Oldham as they are returning all 5 starters from last years Region Runner-up performance. They are led by Lauren Jones(Sr.) who will also contend for region player of the year along with Gray and Tolliver- She has some impressive stats and has already scored just under 1500 points in her career. Had the voting for coach of the year been done after the regional tournament, their coach might have gotten the award. They had a great run and I think won 14 out of their last 15 games and better yet no one expected them to be there but them and they were! Simon Kenton will be right in the mix if they can stay healthy and respond well to thier coach- he is fierce but I love his passion for the game. I would give the egde to Shelby over Anderson. Although Shelby lost a lot, Gray is a tremendous player that I think we will really see explode this year and they will be depending on her more than the past years. She is more than capable of putting up some great numbers. Coach Zimmerman always has them ready to play at the end of the year - they will be there! One of the things that I think everyone gets tired of hearing about is the strength of schedule- but I do think that is why typically we see the same teams close to the top year after year. Tougher schedules even though you might have some loses to go along with that, prepare you for your run in March. It is intersting to look at all the teams schedules and see who is playing the tougher teams- within and outside the region. I think that all the schools should have to play each other at least every other year - how else do you get to know all the teams, coaches, and players? Just food for thought!
  8. Behrens had a great summer and is terrific around the basket and she can go outside for the three as well. She is getting alot of interst from D1 schools. She would be my # 1 with Cundiff in the mix as well.
