The all-star game he deserved, the STATE RING he earned and will have forever and politics can't take that honor away. To answer another comment: Shane choose Wake Forest for the chance to play D-1 and to get a great education, which is why he is going to college. Football will come 2nd to education. a good deal in my book, Wake pays for 4 years and I pay for one. Thanks TomLandry for your comment. Recruiting for a kicker is different, get your best deal at the college that will get you the best education.

Shane Popham - Cov Cath to Wake Forest

Shane contacted Wake in June of 06 with video & stats. Shane & I did a road trip of 13 schools in 7 days, meeting with coaches and school officials. There were several schools that we really liked from the tour. I know when we left Wake that Wake was for him. The atmosphere was great. Shane was persistent with the coaches even though at that time it was a one sided interest. Wake really was not interested in a kicker since they have a great kicker in Sam Swank. who will be a junior. As the high school season progressed and Shane got a chance to show what he could do, interest began to mount. Shane continued to e-mail the coaches weekly with his stats and they stayed in touch somewhat. So to answer your question, Shane got the ball rolling and stayed with it until Coach Mitchell from Wake watched Shane's highlight tape. Shane and his brother Greg get the credit, with help from Coach Rodenberg, Coach Ray & Mrs. Ray (one of Shane's biggest fans). Many people told us early on it is a nightmare for kickers, they are right. I was impressed with the truthfulness & honestly of a lot of programs and was upset with the tactics of some and the lack of interest to keep local kids in the area to play.

From the Popham Family: Thanks to all for your support, prayers, calls to college coaches in support of Shane especially from teams we played aganist, calls to Shane, and well wishes. Our hope is that Shane will represent all of you in the highest standards with his deeds in the classroom and the gridiron at Wake. I hope that Shane was able to add to the excitement of competive high school football in Kentucky and Ohio this past season and will continue to be friends with those he played with and aganist. It is truely a game we all love to watch. The only let down was the lack of interest and attitude from local D1 colleges. Thanks GP

The kicker has not signed yet. He is at Wake Forest today on an official visit. I am hoping this weekend is Christmas and we can put this game to rest. ND has pulled out of the hunt last night when their big running back declared for the NFL.

This is not a paid political announcement: But we had the Guru shoot photos for us during the course of the season and we got GREAT pictures and great service. Something to remember for next season.

Cov Cath should get into the jr. high school football league. This will be a big expense, but it will get the kids in to their program sooner and spend less time on the freshman level of teaching the system. This is a great feeder program that has worked for years for New Cath and especially Highlands. Highlands has perfected the junior football program. I believe that is why year after year they have great freshman football teams. Their kids know the system and have played together. Boone County has also done a good job with their youth league. I believe this is the key to the future.

My top 3 are Ryle, Cov Cath, and Holy Cross. Ryle and Holy Cross are loaded with seniors, who are good ball players and Cov Cath returns everyone in the field but 2 from last year. Blesser's arm appears to be healthy, should be a very interesting season.

We have heard nothing from the new guys at UC. I have sent them material but have heard nothing. They have been busy with their bowl game yesterday, we'll see what this week brings.

Just an update: Ga. Tech and UCLA have asked for transcripts and game film.

The ring is your peice of the state trophy you get to keep FOREVER. The ring is important to everyone on the team from the starters to the backups who made the starters better every day in practice and did not get the glory but are just as important.

Recruitment Update: No offers to date. Talked to Harvard on Saturday, Notre Dame on Sunday( just chit chat), Wake Forest today(they were not going to recruit a kicker this year, but saw his web site and may reconsider, and Holy Cross tonight. That is all that I know, Shane has called Fla. several times in the past 2 weeks but they have not called back.
