There's a difference between going 75 in a 55 several times a year (what some believe Ballard, Scott County, the Catholic schools) and doing 120 in a 55 EVERY DAY (what Cordia did in a 2-year span). Who do you think is more likely to get arrested and get the book thrown at them?

Samsel. Not Sampson. Samsel is a great shooter. 42 percent from 3 alone, 47 percent combined 2s and 3s. Don't leave her open. Ever. But doesn't get to the foul line much. Several players in my area (Ivy Brown, Alexis Brewer) took more FTs in ONE GAME than Samsel did the entire season. Samsel not much of a rebounder, either (2.0 per game). But she played hard both games I saw her. Smart. Doesn't make too many mistakes. Duvall is a go-to player who has to do more for her team. Samsel I think benefited from open looks because teams were so worried about Merriweather and Ruffin. Be interesting to see how much Samsel's stats climb without those two. Samsel is also 2 years older than Duvall. Samsel is a senior now, Duvall a sophomore. I believe Duvall will land more scholarship offers and will go to a bigger school. Not sure, if any, D-I schools have offered Samsel.

I've seen the highlights. Multiple ones in fact. Read several articles on her. Know about AAU and middle-school state titles. She's played several teams in my area. SHE CAN PLAY. She will set several records. She will play D-I. I am not opposing her at all. But you still haven't said why there's "no doubt" she's top-10 when SEVERAL people (AP, BGP, C-J coaches, H-L coaches and whoever picks the All-USA team) who said she wasn't last year. There are plenty of good players in this state. More than a dozen go D-I each year. Just because I'm not ready to put a player (out of 2,000) in the top-10 does not mean I have anything against a player. I repeat: There are more than 2,000 girls varsity players in the state. So do NOT get insulted when people say she's not in the top 00.5 percent JUST YET.

Way to completely dodge the question. You said Duvall is a "no doubt" top-10 player and ripped Bolus' list (who lists his first 12). Throw in Duvall and you have 13. Which three are you pulling off the list? Or instead of ripping a list, give us your own. It's WAY EASY to say "this player should be added." It's a lot HARDER to pull someone off and say she should not be on the list. FWIW, I thought Bolus and Demling both had good lists. Also FWIW, Duvall was not first- or second-team on any of the FIVE separate All-State teams last year. So like I said, I question your "no doubt." Change of address. Pretty sure she is living with her dad now. That would be a decent commute every day to go back and forth from Hodgenville (or Buffalo or Magnolia, where-ever she lived in LaRue County). She played for the same coach for six years (started varsity as a sixth grader, IIRC). Not sure she owes anybody more than that. Kids are not indentured servants to the school closest to their parents' house, contrary to popular belief. Her older brothers went to Bardstown (after BOTH having played varsity for LaRue) when their dad went to Bardstown. She chose to stay. No one gave a fit about the two boys (although neither was second-team all-state at the time; and Bardstown has a better boys' program than LC). She decides to finally go with her dad too (to a school where she has family) and somehow she is doing something unethical. For all the crap other transfers have gotten, not sure why this one should get the red-flag treatment.

You also have to keep in mind Mr. Football is the only Mr./Mrs. Whatever in the state voted on by the media ... not the coaches. There are like five outlets in Louisville (Courier-Journal, WAVE-3, WHAS-11, WLKY-32, WDRB-41) that have votes. Lexington has 2-3 TV stations plus the Herald-Leader. Bowling Green has WBKO-TV and the Bowling Green Daily News. Other voters I can think of include, but are not limited to, daily papers in Ashland, Danville, Elizabethtown, Frankfort, Georgetown (unsure if they subscribe to AP), Hopkinsville, Madisonville, Murray (I think), Owensboro, Paducah, Pikeville, Richmond, Somerset (I think) and the NKY Enquirer. Think the Pikeville TV station gets a vote, too, but not sure if the Cincy TV stations get a vote since they are based in Ohio and not KY. Pretty sure they don't vote in weekly football/basketball AP polls. I say all that with this is mind: - Not a whole lot of voters in WKY, which could make it hard for Sindelar. Even harder since you only play one game a week and he doesn't venture into the eastern time zone a lot (not as much of an issue in basketball, when you can play in neutral-site tourneys or travel a couple of hours on a Saturday). - Ryan's not even the No. 1 candidate in his own area (that would be Harris). I'm thinking a lot of CKY (Lexington area) voters are going to back Harris over Ryan. Sindelar's chances were NOT helped by getting upset in the playoffs. He wasn't in the final playing in front of a lot of voters. He COULD help his chances by committing/signing with Louisville (NOT that I'm advocating that). That could get him on the Louisville media radar. Playing in the state finals on a routine bases really helped Fant. He was in the final every year and people got to see him play in person. It will be interesting to see if the Louisville media contingent backs Brooks (since he is only major candidate from The Ville), or if it goes with who has better stats or better recruited (enter Harris and Sindelar). Voters aren't going to make charts of the top-10 or so candidates every week and see how they fared. They're also not going to go to HUDL and YouTube and watch highlight tapes (which tend to never show a bad week or how a kid bounces back from an interception, sack, hurried pass, fumble, dropped pass, broken play, etc.).

1) Brewer's dad is in Bardstown, where he starred in High School and has coached the boys to two region titles. Both of her older brothers followed him to Bardstown (and won a region title) and no one said anything. But Alexis does and there's something wrong with that? 2) Not for athletic purposes. She was played quite a bit when she played volleyball and was an absolute star (still is) in girls' basketball. Bardstown is worse in both volleyball (should she decide to return) and basketball. Not for more playing time. Not for playing with better competition and certainly not about advancing far in postseason (since LaRue is coming off back-to-back region championship game appearances). I don't see this taking the KHSAA long to rule on. She'll be eligible.

Tony Perkins was a longtime boys' assistant at North Hardin (under Ron Bevars) before becoming a girls' head coach at North Hardin. The superintendent (Alvin Garrison) came from John Hardin and has strong ties to Elizabethtown Independent. But at this time, this late in the game (school starting) for the life of me can't name a veteran candidate from Hardin County. It is interesting, though, that Casey County boys' coach Maze Stallworth is the all-time leading scorer in John Hardin history. Not sure if Stallworth teaches at Casey County, so job wise he might be more prone to move than a another coach-teacher.

Couldn't part of the reason you DON'T see them already is because there isn't much incentive to transfer when you know full well you don't meet Bylaw 6? It's not like you see Male kids trying to go to Ballard and John-North-Central Hardin kids trying to go to E'town without moving all the time and being found ineligible left right and center. As far as not sending my kid to Assumption as a freshman, why spend $80,000 (four years at $20,000) a year when $20,000 (one year, i.e. senior year) will get the same goal in her most important (senior) season ... playing with a top-quality team against national competition with better talent around her? Also the same reason many parents send their kids to publics k-8 and private 9-12 ... heck of a lot cheaper.

Except not every district has that rule. Not even close. And they would ALL have to be reciprocal (sic). You don't have to live in Louisville to attend Trinity. You don't have to even live in Hardin County to attend Elizabethtown (independent public) or Central Hardin (public). You don't have to live in Nelson County to attend Bardstown Bethlehem (independent Catholic private). Don't have to live in Fayette County to attend LexCath. By doing this, you're hurting publics even more because privates have broader pools. You don't have to live next to Manual to attend Manual. To make it EASIER to transfer (one freebie, no questions asked, no moving necessary) and expect transfers to stay the same/decrease is beyond crazy. Out in Podunk? No impact. But you really want to give kids a free pass to Ballard and Male and Highlands? Make it easier for them to go to Trinity and St. Xavier? A lot easier to afford Trinity and X and Notre Dame and Sacred Heart and Assumption for one year than it is four years. If I was a volleyball parent and my kid had a shot, I'd do everything in my power to get her to SHA or Assumption for her senior year. And I don't even have to move? Heck yes.

PurplePride92, If a new "one freebie" rule WON'T change anything as you suggest, then why implement it? Why advocate a rule change with no affect/effect? Seems like a waste. FWIW, it would be a lot easier for transfers in Louisville, Lexington and NKY than say WKY, Bowling Green, Hardin County where schools are more spread out if people didn't have to worry about moving. Check the transfer PDFs on the KBSA minutes/agendas the KHSAA has to provide. More often than not, these are the types of transfers found ineligible: - Tilghman to McCracken (and likewise) - Frankfort to Franklin County or Western Hills - Danville to Boyle - Holy Cross to Lloyd And so on. Most of those kids/families/parents never move (yet tried to transfer anyway). A freebie transfer WOULD have major implications -- especially to those in areas where there is another school in an easy drive. Greenup County? Hancock County? No change. Louisville? Lexington? NKY? Can of worms. Pandora's box. Like I said earlier, why would a kid (who can play) stay at Western, Southern, Seneca, Iroquois when he could go to Ballard and Male without penalty or anything to worry about? You say they happen all the time. Go back and check the PDFs. Not as many as you would have us believe. It's not running rampant in Louisville. Freebies would change that tenfold.

Some people give reasons for why (one-time) transfers should be OK, but then expect the number of transfers NOT to skyrocket? How so? And how would allowing one-time transfers NOT impact recruiting? With the one-time transfer you're making it HARDER on those struggling schools/programs to ever get better, because you're making it EASIER for their top kids to leave. Why would they stay when they could go to a nearby better program no questions asked? And if you think they SHOULD stay, why do you advocate a one-time free pass? Seems counteractive and counter-intuitive. Who cares about developing younger kids when you can just encourage better ones to come to your school? And if you're a parent of a student that had bided his or her time, how would you feel to have some "hired guns" lock down that roster spot/playing time your kid had worked hard to get? There's also something to be said for school spirit/community support when you have stars no one recognizes/follows. Even some EKY folks felt Cordia wasn't a "local" team.

The transfer lists are available on KHSAA. Naming names. Who was eligible, who was not, who was over-ruled. More often than not, transfers ARE eligible. Better than 70 percent. It's not like the majority are being found ineligible. Not even close to majority. "if one school isn't working" -- That's usually NOT the case. It's a specific sports program or coach at that school. "A parent has the right to send their kids to a good school" -- A parent can send their kid to four schools in four years if they want. NO ONE (not even the KHSAA) is stopping them. They just can't play sports at four schools in four years without meeting transfer rules. HUGE DIFFERENCE. Secondly, sometimes when those athletes transfer, they transfer to WORSE schools academically, but they happen to just have better athletics. What a coincidence! Transferring and being eligible to do everything after a transfer (for whatever reason) is a different argument. Plenty of non-athletes transfer all the time. Bottom line is kids can STILL transfer whenever, wherever. There is NO state law or KHSAA bylaw stopping that. Zip. Zero. None.

SportsGuy, One free transfer per kid no questions asked is a very bad idea, especially for kids who have always gone where they're supposed to go ... through the end of their junior year, that is. One coaching change in Louisville, Lexington or Northern Kentucky -- where you have thousands of kids in a close radius -- could change EVERYTHING in basketball/football. Say for some reason a popular AAU coach gets a job at a high school. You want him to be able to pluck quality players from 4-5 rivals and be able to have them immediately eligible? Should kids be able to leave nearby Central Hardin, John Hardin, North Hardin to go play for Mark Brown (first-year at E'town, but proven winner) on the area's only turf field at the area's highest-rated school (academically) had they not transferred before? The "free pass" idea sounds good in theory, but horrible idea in reality. Recruiting would be WORSE, not better. Seniors would become hired guns, mercenaries if you will.

They could have dropped out BEFORE the ruling. Any school can pull out of the KHSAA any time. However, it's hard for a PUBLIC school (which Cordia claims to be) to be run as a prep school. Also, EVERY Cordia team would have to pull out of the KHSAA. Can't pick and choose which sports play where. Prep School boys' hoops is big and OK for football, hockey (don't see it) and lacrosse (maybe), but not very advanced for every other sports. If Cordia goes prep school: 1) Lots of kids no longer playing sports 2) Travel would increase 10X. 3) Would media exposure actually be better? How often would big tv stations/newspapers be coming down there?

What's the criteria/criterion? A) How good the player was in the Sweet 16? B) How good the player went on to be? If it is "A", then Antwain Barbour's 2000 Sweet 16 EASILY gets him on the 2000s team. As good as Tony Key was, Barbour was better. If it is "B", then Mayo is a 2000s team LOCK. He's in the NBA. And if Billy/Bill Walker was on the roster of the Rose Hill team which went to State, then Walker gets on the team, too.

In spite of the name, I don't consider Bowling Green to be Western Kentucky. Owensboro, sure. That being said, IF the state tourney was moved to Ashland, how many region champs would be 90 minutes from the park? That could determine fan support. Put the tourney in E'town, though and regions 3 (Owensboro is within 90 miles, as is Meade and Butler County), region 4 (Bowling Green), region 5 (host region, Central Hardin and Green County), 6 (Louisville), 7 (Louisville) and some other regions (Lexington, Danville) are within 90 miles. Even NKy is less than 2.5 hours from E'town. Makes no sense -- or cents, as I would fear KHSAA would lose a ton of money moving softball tourney to Ashland or Corbin or Pikeville -- to force the majority a lot more travel.

Four King Crazy, Louisville and WKU both have great softball stadiums. UK does too. NKU might. Never been. Both U of L and WKU offered their stadiums in the past, but coaches' association -- NOT THE KHSAA -- voted to DECLINE the offer because tourney would be forced to go to single elimination. There's no Title IX issue at play. It's been ruled on time and time again (not just in Kentucky, but in other states where baseball is a at minor league or college field and softball is at a smaller stadium or park, like KY). Until Coaches/KHSAA want to go back to single elimination/one-and-done setup, playing at a college will be awfully difficult. You COULD argue that it should be at a nicer park facility, however: -- Elizabethtown was booked for that weekend. E'town has NO press box, either. E'town also CHARGES rental fee, while KHSAA uses facilities for free. -- Buchanon/Bowling Green didn't offer as much financially to KHSAA. -- Ashland is deemed too far out of the way. -- People don't like "skinned" infields at Jefferstown -- Tiebreaker (Hopkinsville) didn't want State -- Frankfort's city-owned softball complex needs to be remodeled to be considered as an elite facility Plus, as proven by gate receipts, crowds were bigger at Fisher/Owensboro than at other places which have hosted. I'm NOT from Owensboro. I'm from E'town and I wish the Elizabethtown Sports Park was designed better, because the E.S.P. has a LOT going for it. That being said, the E.S.P. booked a youth baseball tourney for the same week as KHSAA state. Has more teams. More from out of state. Means more money for city. The KHSAA needs Elizabethtown more than Elizabethtown needs a three-day, 16-team tournament which WON'T help as much as bringing in a travel-ball tourney.
