  1. I felt more sorry for the parents. I know "the vacuums" parents, and I would have to think that they would be very proud to walk out and acknowledge that thier son was a three year starter, while also being able to kick a--s (literally) on the gridiron. Probably didn't mean a whole lot to the players. But it does to the parents.
  2. I got to see most of today's game, and none of the so called "POY Candidates" helped thier cause today defensively. Maile had past balls that allowed runners to advance. Farris had a bunch of past balls, and many of them allowed runners to score from third. Distant POY Candidate Mark Reed had a ground ball go through his legs that allowed a rally to continue. Offensively, all of them had a decent game, but nothing spectacular. They all put the ball in play, Maile had an early RBI, but then got beaned (not intentionally), and got walked (I believe). Farris had a hit, got walked a couple times and hit into a fielders choice. Reed had a hit or two, and hit a bomb to the fence that Brandon "Willie Mays" Nutini caught as he ran into the fence. The thing that made Brandon's catch more luck than skill was that as he ran back toward the fence, he followed the ball with his eyes, then he actually took his eyes off the ball and was looking at the wall (thinking it was going over the fence) when the ball just happened to land in his glove as he went to run into the wall with his hands. He was as surprised as the rest of the crowd that the ball landed in his glove. Brandon wasn't doing to much "high stepping" as he was still licking his wounds from dropping a "can of corn" in the outfield earlier in the game that allowed a run to score. Overall, a well pitched game by Krohman. Didn't have a great deal of support from his defense. A misjudged fly ball in the outfield really hurt. Past balls hurt him, and a couple bad throws, etc... He pitched well though. Niehaus and Isler pitched well, but Isler has got to speed up his windup. Boone stole on him and was standing on second before Maile even received the ball. It was so bad that they were stealing third while down 5 or 6 runs in the last inning. There was no risk, so why not.
  3. Careful, Oldguy.... there is a well documented understanding that one of the Cov Cath star players was guilty in the same incident. It just so happens that CCHS punished the player in a not so "public" fashion. Same crime, different punishment.
  4. That is why they are JV umps. They are "up and coming stars" also. Understand that JV umps work JV games. Just like Varsity Umps work varsity games. I can tell you from working some varsity games this year... we were the bright spot in the game.... if you know what I mean. So give the guys in blue an opportunity to work on thier game and expect them to give 100% but also boot one every once in a while. Would you yell at your JV shortstop for giving 100% but also booting one.... NO!!! So give the same slack to the up and coming men in blue. They have had to be very patient with this year working most games one man crew, and also working almost every day of the week.
  5. I know the field at Erlanger Lions Park is open tomorrow night. That would be an upgrade to Beechwoods. If that is not good enough, Franzen Field is probably open. We could drink a couple brews while watching the game there. Maybe even catch a couple fish if the game gets boring.
  6. I stated my opinion in a thread about 2 months ago, and that was that Maile was a step above everyone else in the ninth region. I had probably 15 people tell me I was being too generous. So far, I was pretty accurate... only Farris is keeping up with him. I still stand behind the fact that he WILL be player of the year probably the next three years, and all others mentioned in this thread are good players, but not at the same level as Maile (and Farris). Look at the stats, Lastly, for the person that said that Catching is so much easier than playing shortstop (I can't believe I am even wasting my time commenting here)... first off, I don't even think that Farris is catching for Boone. He started out the season in Centerfield, and I have not heard otherwise. Even if he was catching, try catching 7 games in a eight day stretch and still have enough drive in your legs to hit the ball 400 feet. Ain't no Shortstops out there hitting them with that kind of drive. Maybe the shortstops should do some squats to strengthen those legs up. Regardless, saying that playing shortstop is strenuos and catching is easy has been playing in too many softball beer leagues. :irked: :irked:
  7. Interesting, @ 4 years ago the umpire was responsible for going ahead and making the call without an appeal being necessary. This was probably a veteran umpire that made the call (one that no longer keeps up on the current rules). :D If the offensive coach didn't argue about it :argue:, I guess he quit going to the meetings too...  This rule changed @ 3 or 4 years ago in KY. I think it is a NFHS rule so that would mean OH uses the same rules.
  8. Yeah, I took all the heat for this one. I wasn't going to use the on deck batter as a sacrificial lamb. I know that this was not the correct answer, but we ended up calling a Mulligan. We called the two coaches together and all four of us agreed on a compromised... Do-over... Replay... The logic used was the following. 1. First and foremost, I really booted the situation. 2. The batter struck out so he doesn't deserve first base. 3. The pitcher threw a wild pitch, so he doesn't deserve the strike out. The next pitch, the kid got a base hit and naturally, the defensive team changed thier mind and didn't agree that it was a good compromise. I got heckled (well deserved) the rest of the game by the fan's. I am good friends with the home coach and we still laugh about the play over beers every once in a while. You have reached a level of maturity when you can admit a screwup and get a belly laugh when you are the butt of the joke. :D
  9. That rule about playing or not playing was only used during the first round of the regionals. The four first round regional games are played at the district winners home field, but if one of the four were unplayable, all of them were cancelled. Also, I believe that this was just a gentleman's agreement amoungst the coaches. I don't think that this is mandatory. In the All "A" Classic, I don't think there is such rules.
  10. And at this moment, you are half right.... Last I heard, the Bellevue/Beechwood game was being played at 5pm, but the St. Henry/Holy Cross game was postponed until tomorrow (Friday).
  11. I had a similar situation with a batter having an 0-2 count in a college level game. The pitch came in (wicked curve ball outside) and was in the dirt. The batter checked his swing (I felt) and in the meantime, the ball got past the catcher. Since no-body was on base, the on-deck batter went to retrieve the wild pitch that went all the way to the backstop (40 feet back at Thomas More) and I hurled a new ball to the pitcher. Right as I threw the ball to the pitcher, the catcher pointed to the first base umpire. My umpiring partner at first (without me asking) called a strike on the batter. At this point, all heck broke loose.   The batter took off running to first (dropped third strike). The pitcher caught the ball I threw him and threw it to first, and the on-deck batter who was retrieving the past ball, had the catcher run back and was just about wrestling him for the ball.  The bad thing about this was there was no-easy way to get out of this one. Do you call the batter safe at first?? Do you call the batter out?? Caused quite an argument. :argue: I wish there were Mulligan's in baseball... because me and my partner really booted this one. As a result, I am much slower to grab another ball out of the ball bag and hurl it back to the pitcher in the event of a check swing.
  12. You know the interesting thing about this thread that i just realized... If there is a runner on 1st base, the umpire (in a two man crew) is positioned in the middle of the infield. Therefore, making it very hard for them to appeal the swing in the first place. In the second place, if the runner is stealing, that umpire in the middle of the field is not "focused" on the pitch, he is getting in position anticipating a throw from the catcher. In this situation, the umpire in the middle of the field would in most cases not overrule the plate umpire. who had a better view of the play (unless he was blocked out). If I am the middle infield umpire, I would never overrule my partner in that situation. So, BALL would be called. If my partner was blocked out, I would still be hard pressed to call it a strike given my responsibility was to be in position for the throw to second.
  13. The reason it isn't necessary, is because if they just accept the fact that it was a ball, then the batter is walked. The runner is protected until he gets to second. Since he got to second ... and beyond with the overslide, he is out when tagged on the overslide. If he does decide to appeal, and it is called a strike, the runner is still out because he got tagged out while trying to steal. So either way, the runner is out. On a walk, he is only protected until he gets to the bag. The Prepster....
  14. Both Semi-finals are being played at St. Henry on Thursday evening. I know this for a fact. Not sure what time who plays though. 4:30, 5pm first game and probably 7 or 7:30 second game. Still not sure who plays which game though. Finals will be Friday night if Mother Nature has no other plans.
  15. It isn't necessary, but some catchers may ask for it just for clarity. Also, you are going to need an answer just to prepare for the inevitable "conversation" with the offensive coach when you tell him the runner is out either way. But a little respectful conversation explaining to the coach that the runner did not overrun the base because he thought it was ball four (even if he had, his is still out). This is a case where you have to give a coach an opportunity to try to plead his case, but he really has none. Conversation would be short, sweet, and game goes on.
  16. Many of you may remember a post from 2 weeks ago where it was mentioned that several players from the KY Kids team would excel for CCH. Mind if I quote the Ky Post box score... Maile 2-3, 2 RBIs; Nutini 2B; Holocher 2-3, 2B Include in this Nutini picking up the save, and Holocher saving the game with his defense. All three of these guys are KY Kids alumni. I guess my point has been made the first day of the season.

  18. Wrong on the Mr. Maile. I don't even know Mr. Maile. I know baseball!!! And anyone that knows baseball knows that stolen bases have more to do with the pitcher than they do catcher. Probably wouldn't have gotten the same sarcastic answer if the boy from Ryle had been on my list. Big difference between the biased posts and the unbiased posts on this type of thread.
  19. That makes sense because someone also mentioned a player be under the weather with a high fever. Unfortunate for Casey and NDA.
  20. Royal Uncle, I have to give you credit ... you are 100% correct. :D I mean when you stated.... "I know this sounds like sour grapes".... You were 100% correct. The rest of your post... WHATEVER!!! everyone has an opinion that they are entitled to.
  21. Yeah, and I noticed on the stats that she played 13 or 14 minutes. So she wasn't out hurt. I also noticed that she went 0/11 from the field, so if she wasn't sick before the game, she may be now. She is a great player, but just like any player that relies on an outside shot, there are games when the ball feels like you are shooting a beach ball on a windy day. It appears the entire team didn't shoot too well (30 something percent but 89 percent from the charity stripe.)I guarantee that Casey contributed on the defensive end. She's got two more years to work on shooting beach balls. I did see that Kirsten Delph (another really good soph) picked up the slack for Casey. They (Kirsten and Casey) have played many AAU and select games together, so it is not the first, nor will it be the last. Good sophomore combo for NDA. Anyway, thanks for the update...
  22. Someone posted in the "updates" thread that NDA was really missing having Tierney and JACKSON today in thier state tournament loss??? What happened to Jackson. Hope this was a misstatement? Anyone know?
  23. I think you can break the region out like this.... Level 1 Luke Maile (Cov Cath catcher and bambino) Level 2 Everyone else This is not an insult to everyone else, it is meant as a tribute to Luke. I am a completely unbiased 9th region baseball fan. I see almost every varsity team in action at one point or another. Luke last year as a Freshman set himself apart... not just in physical talent, but in knowledge of the game, class and the way he carries himself, unwillingness to slack off. Only catcher that I have ever seen play a double header behind the plate and didn't let a single pitch go to the backstop. Regardless of base runners or not, he blocks the ball no matter how bad of a pitch. It doesn't hurt that he has played under Bill Holocher as a coach with the KY Kids for the past bunch of years. In two years when this class is seniors, if you look at the all region team, you will probably see @ 5 or 6 players from Bill's KY Kids teams. That being said, I like these other players: Murray from Ryle, Shanks from St. Henry Farris from Boone (2nd best catcher in the region) Popham from CCH. I heard he signed with Wake Forest for football.. not sure though. I hope he still plays baseball. Great kid and family. Sullivan from Holy Cross Ryan from Holy Cross
