  1. gchs, does the Herald-Leader have the stats for the game? I can't open the .pdf files.

    I'm always here to help!

    WHITLEY CO. (11-14) — McCumbers 16, Akins 9,

    Prewitt 5, Lowrie 4, Crawford 5, Lovett 2, Ponder 2,

    Powers 5, Danrels 5.

    MCCREARY CENTRAL (21-3) — Watts 22, Swiger

    22, Phillips 15, Hale 4, Musgrove 3, Roark 9, Lay 7,

    Dixon 8, Wright 8, Tucker 2.

    Whitley Co. . . . . . . . . .5 7 19 22— 53

    McCreary Central . . .23 27 24 26—100

  2. Anderson still good enough to take the 8th? I haven't seen them play yet, but just curious?

They are very solid. Good size and have a nice ability to score. They aren't head-and-shoulders above everyone in the region, though. Anderson County can definitely win the 8th Region, but I think several other schools have just as good of shot.

  3. WOW!! This really surprises me. Looks like a bad night for Anderson, although I guess any night with a win should be considered a good night. I don't recall a game seeing Penny get less that 20. He ok?

For what it's worth, Woodford County is 16-8 in the 11th Region and Anderson County is a big rival of the Yellowjackets. Anderson is good but not great - I think everyone in Lawrenceburg would be happy with this result.

  4. Good win Lincoln.

After watching McCreary tonight I would have to disagree with Lincoln being the "Clear Favorite". However, I certainly think they are one of the favorites.

I think Lincoln holds the edge because of postseason experience. Remember, McCreary didn't play in the regional tournament last year. It will be a very good tournament though and McCreary will give a good showing. Should be exciting!

  5. I agree with an earlier poster that both teams could have handled the situation better. I understand the desire of McCreary to score 100 and the desire for Whitley to keep them from it. It might have been better if both teams had just put the JV's in and let the chips fall.

Either way, McCreary needed a big win for confidence sake. The Raiders have a solid ballclub but obviously had to be a little shaken by the home loss to Rockcastle County. I think McCreary is the clear #2 team in the 12th Region, just a slight notch below Lincoln County. McCreary Central is looking for their first regional title since 1983. We might be setting up an exciting finish to the regional tournament!

  6. It should be an interesting rematch in three weeks.

There rematch should be a very good ballgame. Garrard led by three after three quarters in the first game before a quick spurt by Boyle finished the Lions off. Last night saw Garrard lead basically the whole way before struggling late, but they were able to pull it out in overtime.

I'd probably give a slight district tournament edge to Boyle County because they are bigger than Garrard and they have so much postseason experience and success. Senior point guard Nate Ploskonka it the only Lion to have played in a regional tournament and he was a freshman. But Garrard's style is so difficult to defend and they get so many easy buckets. Boyle County will be a slight favorite, but they'll have to play a great game to win.

  7. By the way, per the Herald-Leader here is how scoring shook down last night:

    Garrard County (14-11)

    Jordan Phillips - 15

    Tyler Woods - 13

    Nate Ploskonka - 12

    Justin Ray - 10

    Evan Preston - 9

    Boyle County (12-10)

    Christian Williams - 20

    Jones - 11

    Jordan Aumiller - 8

    Bryce Perry - 6

    Tritopoe - 4

    Rees Macshara - 3

    Howell - 3

    Boyle Co. . . . . .9 12 15 11 8—55

    Garrard Co. . .10 14 12 11 12—59

  8. I will be interested to see if Elliott County can score. It's seems like their offense has been below par in games that would be labeled "big:"

    Christian County (W, 72-63)

    Covington Catholic (L, 76-62)

    Rose Hill Christian (L, 62-55)

Mason County won't shut them down, but in big games Elliott seems to cool off some - probably due to good opponent defense. I would expect Mason County to win 75-60.

  9. Their best friends so it won't matter. One of them will get the job when Harp decides to go which could be in a year or two.

Agreed. But it doesn't seem like Harp is in any hurry to leave. Whenever Sam Harp leaves Danville I'm sure Jerry Perry and Marty Jaggers will be the two favorites to be his replacements. But that status wouldn't be altered if Perry was the coach at Garrard, just like it wouldn't with Jaggers being at Mercer.

  10. Hey GCHS_UK9, are you the stat keeper or what?? I've never seen such detailed breakdowns of seasonal stats. I agree with LCPATS and MR. Network - Cooper does deserve a shot at the head job. He's been in the system for 7 years as second in command and I think he would do a great job. Sounds like the community needs to understand athlete turnover especially at a small school like Garrard.

Not a stat keeper at all. Just have some information that's been handed down to me from some previous folks. I understand why some would think current assistants deserve a shot, but the Garrard program has gotten somewhat stale. I don't mean to imply that Cooper was a bad coach - I just think it would be wise to step out of the current system.

I think the community of Lancaster does understand athlete turnover and how schools are affected by it. But even when talent is down, coaches should still be in control and players should improve. The problem with Garrard County is that so many players never improved under the previous staff.

Trust me, no one is expecting Garrard County to win state championships on a yearly basis. But if you look back at the last seven years Garrard County rarely beat any team of significance. That, to me, speaks to poor coaching. The district they have competed in has rarely been top-heavy, yet the previous staff never truly sniffed a district title with the exception of 2004.

What the people of Garrard County would like to see is a new face with a new style - the Stonebraker & Co. style is played-out.
